Every singer has that phase of asking: “Who do I sound like?” or “Do I sound like [insert famous performer]?” It’s a question that feels harmless — even helpful — until it starts to hold you back. Because the moment you’re chasing someone else’s sound, you’re stepping away from your own.
When I first began training and performing professionally, without realising it, I was trying to fit the mould of what I thought was a ‘perfect musical theatre performer’. Every song I sang, I was listening to cast recordings, picking up other performers riffs, phrasing, or optional high notes. I’d catch myself thinking, “Oh, that’s how it’s supposed to sound.” But working on original musicals and new scores changed everything. Suddenly, there was no recording to copy. No reference track. No one else’s version to hide behind. I had to explore, experiment, and find my own sound — and that’s where everything started to click.
Once I stopped trying to sound like anyone and started sounding as myself, everything shifted. My voice became freer. I stopped overthinking every note and started enjoying the process again. It wasn’t about blending in anymore — it was about discovering what made me stand out.
That’s something I see often when I teach. Many singers arrive wanting to sound like a particular performer, because that’s the voice they’ve fallen in love with. But real growth begins when they start asking, “What feels good for me?” rather than “What would they do?” That’s when tone opens up, confidence builds, and something genuine begins to appear — their own sound.
Finding your voice isn’t about reaching for the biggest note or copying someone else’s choices. It’s about exploring what feels natural, expressive, and personal to you. The more you let go of imitation, the more your individuality shines through — and that’s what truly connects with an audience.
Because no one else in the world has your voice — and that’s your greatest advantage.✨&Ready to Find Your Sound?✨lt;/p>Whether you’re training for auditions, building confidence, or simply exploring your creativity, I’d love to help you uncover the voice that’s truly yours. 🌟& Own your story.
