Podcasts are a wonderful way to improve your language knowledge You can find podcasts of any level and just about every topic you can imagine. As a language learner, I would aim to choose them lasting up to a maximum of 30 minutes and, even that, can be a little long for some of you. Our podcasts are between 10 to 15 minutes and you can listen to them here: The Fitting in with the French podcast - About (fireside.fm)

I don t know about you, but I LOVE listening to podcasts on various topics. I often choose business and teaching related ones and I know that many of my French learners listen to a variety of podcasts, both in English and French.

Find a podcast you will like and try to listen to it / parts of it 10-15 minutes a day. You can also revisit a podcast a few days / weeks later and see how much more you understand than the first time round. Before you start listening to a podcast, make sure you move from passive learner to active learner: Passive learner: Listening to a podcast whilst cooking. Active learner: Listening to a podcast, with pen and paper, without distractions.

Here are my 5 steps to boost your French with podcasts:

Listen to the podcast once without looking at the transcri pt. Try to get the gist.

Listen to it again with the transcri pt. Use a pen to highlight the words you didn t understand when pronounced or just didn t know at all and look them up. Also, choose 5-10 words you would like to re-use and jot them down.

Listen to it again now that you know all the vocabulary. You should understand a lot more.

Pick a part of the podcast that you enjoyed and read it aloud focusing on your pronunciation. Aim for a passage with a couple of paragraphs.

Shadow that same part of the podcast: Practice reading the passage at the same time as the podcast speaker. Tricky, I know, but give it a go! This will help you with your pronunciation, fluency and intonation.

If this isn t enough and you want to challenge yourself you could also:

Change the speed of the podcast and make it a little faster.

Write a summary of the podcast, re-using some of the new vocabulary you have learnt.

Make your own vocabulary list with sentences you would like to re-use.

Transcribe a part of the podcast. Focus on your listening skills and spelling at the same time.

Ask a fellow French learner of the same level to listen to the same podcast and have a discussion about it with them.
