Writing Frame (with some exemplars/scaffolding)

Paragraph 1: Define the two options tall structures vs flat structures. Exemplar:

A tall structure is where there are more layers with a smaller span of control. Whereas a flat structure has fewer layers of hierarchy and a wider span of control.

Paragraph 2: Advantage of remaining as a tall structure.

  • One advantage of remaining as a tall structure is
  • This means that
  • As a result
  • *Link back to how they can become more cost/time effective*

One advantage of remaining as a tall structure is that the employees within the business have clear roles. This will benefit the business because they have 54,000 employees, so a hierarchy will mean that individuals know who they are reporting to, and who is responsible for what. This is important for Rolls Royce as their workforce are highly skilled in specific parts of engineering. As a result of a rigid, tall hierarchy, there will be clear lines of communication which should allow for quicker decision making which was a problem that Warren East was trying to solve previously.

Paragraph 3: Advantage of moving towards a flat structure

  • One advantage of restructuring towards a flat structure
  • This means that
  • As a result

Paragraph 4: Disadvantages of a tall structure

  • One limitation of proceeding with a tall structure is
  • This means that
  • As a result
  • *Link back to how they can become more cost/time effective*

Paragraph 5: Disadvantages of a flat structure

  • This means that
  • As a result
  • *Link back to how they can become more cost/time effective*

  • Because
  • This is despite the fact that
  • Because..

  • The recommendation may be best in the short/long term because..
  • However
  • This means that, in the short/long term it would be more beneficial to use a structure
  • Because
  • However, this will depend on
