Writing a good CV in English is a challenging but necessary step in career development. It can be especially difficult for non-native English speakers. As a professional recruiter with over 10 years experience in recruiting senior and executive positions here are my tips to creating a good CV.

1. Use of a photo is not recommended

Your age, date of birth, national insurance number should not be included at all. Unless the position requires your appearance (acting/modelling) refrain from including a photograph. We discourage personal information other than contact details.

2. Have a clear summary or profile

This statement should be clear and concise. It should be relevant to your experience and clearly and your goal.

3. Include your achievements

This is where you demonstrate the value you have added. Use action words and numbers. Listing your duties is not enough what difference did you make? What value did you add?

4. Use a second page .or a third

Cramming all your experience one page is not only unrealistic but will do you more harm than good. True no one wants to read War and Peace , if your CV is well laid out and relevant, it will be read.

5. Correctly position education, qualifications and skills

Recent graduates should document their education and qualifications before their work experience. Professionals mid-way through their career may list this after their work experience. Key skills should always be relevant to the position and can be included in the summary/profile
