What if I told you you could consume your days worth of vitamins in one teaspoon? What are they? Superfoods. Have you ever tried one? Most likely you have.

Lee Tilghman, a famous food instagrammer and blogger, says, For me, matcha is my #1. I love the way it gives me a steady energetic creative flow, keeps me focused without the jitters, and I don`t experience a come down. Sometimes if I drink too much of it, I can feel the effects of over-caffeination coming on, which is why I definitely monitor it and don`t drink it after 1pm in the afternoon. Matcha also has a slew of other health benefits it s high in antioxidants, improves mental focus and clarity, detoxifying properties, good for hair skin and nails, contains an amino acid known as L-Theanine which promotes the production of alpha waves in the brain, and it induces relaxation without the inherent drowsiness caused by other downers .

The benefits of eating superfoods are they reduce risk of heart disease, it protects against cancerous cells, and it helps people overcome obesity. Eating healthy also reduces the risk of getting diabetes, it lowers blood pressure, and reduces the risk of having kidney stones. Most students at Bedford, a middle school in Westport, do not care about what they are putting into their body. They tend to count the number of calories instead of looking at the deeper facts.

Samantha Webster, a student at Bedford, says, I think that the school is trying very hard to raise awareness for healthy eating. However, many students just ignore it.

Twenty-one students were asked the question, on a scale of 1-10 how much do you care about dieting? 57.1% of the students responded on the lower end with a 1-3 answer.

When asking Bedford nurse Carmel Keaveny what her biggest tip is when it comes to eating healthy she responded, I try to teach students here at Bedford to add a salad to their lunch. I like to add vegetables to every meal. I found that students really like cucumbers, so I tell them to incorporate them to their lunches. Drinking lots of water is also important.

Keaveny stated she watches what she eats because she knows obesity can lead to medical issues, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Because she knows she could be tempted to eat sweets that are laying around the house, she says she eats healthy everyday (typically a salad with grilled chicken and light dressing.)

The global market value of chia seeds -a small, yet powerful superfood- was estimated at about 0.27 billion U.S. dollars in 2016.

According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the percentage of teens that are overweight or obese has more than doubled in the last three decades. Approximately 12.5 million or 17% of children aged two to nineteen are considered overweight.

A survey which had twenty-one students who responded, 76.2% of them replied with an average when asked the question: What do you consider your food choices to be?

61.9% of the twenty-one students said almost every night they have dessert, and 9.5% said, yes, I love sweets! Six students answered with never.

According to Ms. Lee Tilghman, when asking her what her biggest tip is when it comes to eating healthy she said, listening to your body.

Most teens eat after-school snacks. Some may not even be hungry. Some choose to eat because they know they will be hungry later. Tilghman s tip is essential for teens to be aware of because often when teens are in a rush they grab a bag of chips or a piece of candy, while a better option would be reaching for a banana. Good habits are developed at a young age, and being a teenager is an essential time in a person s life to develop these habits.

However, Mrs. Petronella Ravenshear, a British nutritionist featured in an issue of British Vogue, says that, kale can send your thyroid haywire and quinoa irritates the gut.

Daily Mail claim s, goji berries should be eaten with caution if you have arthritis and chia seeds inhibits the absorption of certain minerals.

Chia seeds must be eaten in a liquid substance due to their ability to soak up water. Water-soaked chia seeds are easier to digest and the nutrients are better absorbed and digested in your body soaking the chia prolongs hydration and retains electrolytes, especially during exercise.

Goji berries have been known to help fight off diseases such as cancer, however these superfood berries worsen arthritis in the elderly and cause bad diarrhea.

People have started to purchase more superfoods because they believe they are super and think since they are healthy they can eat a lot in a short amount of time.

Daily Mail points out diets should be varied and no single vegetable produces miracle results. More people should eat these superfoods in moderation because having too much of any type of food can be harmful.

Over the past two years, the percentage of food and drink products containing chia seeds has risen by 70%, while the percentage containing pumpkin seeds has grown by 27% and the percentage of food and drink products containing sunflower seeds has grown by 22%.

When asking a student at Bedford Middle School, who wishes to remain anonymous, if she tries to watch what she eats she stated, yes, because when I was in seventh grade I lost a lot of weight when I was sick, and now I am trying to get back that weight that I lost by eating healthy but still being able to gain weight.

There are steps you can take in order to live a healthy lifestyle.

Listen to your body. Don t eat food when you re not hungry. If you are craving sugar, eat a piece of fruit. Fresh, eat a salad with dressing. Healthy eating doesn t take much.

Don t make this seem like it is a diet because it s not! When you re a growing teen you need complex carbohydrates which are made up of sugar molecules that are strung together in long, complex chains. They are turned into glucose (blood sugar) in the body and are used as energy.

Finally, remember to eat with moderation because no food will do wonders to your body if you consume too much of it - even superfoods. Now, go on a search in your pantry or fridge and find these superheroes in disguise because most likely you have had these super foods.
