The Council of Europe is established the European Day of Languages (EDL), which is celebrated each year on the 26th of September. There are between 6000 and 7000 languages in the world - spoken by 7 billion people divided into 189 independent states.

In this day, the European Council is encouraging all Europeans who represent the 47 members of the European Council to start learning a new language.

The Council of Europe is convinced that linguistic diversity is a tool for achieving a greater intercultural understanding and a key element in the rich cultural heritage of our continent and promotes plurilingualism throughout.

The Objectives of this day is:

Emphasise the importance of language, learning and diversifying the range of languages that can be learned in order to increase plurilingualism and intercultural communication.

Promote the richness of linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe, we must preserve and enhance.

Promote the lifelong learning of languages both inside and outside the school, either for the purpose of conducting studies, exchanges, for professional needs, mobility or pleasure.

Due to the influx of migrants and refugees, Europe has become largely multilingual. In London alone some 300 languages are spoken (Arabic, Turkish, Berber, Hindi, Punjabi, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, etc.).
