“A different language is a different vision of life.” Federico Fellini, Italian film director.

One of the biggest challenges MFL teachers face is students’ lack of motivation. Pupils often question the purpose of learning a foreign language. They argue that it is pointless as most people around the world speak English. After addressing this misconception, it is important to remind students, “bilingualism is the rule rather than the exception in many, if not most, parts of the world” (Jones & Wiliam 2008). The next argument consists in explaining that learning another language helps them to improve their English through the grasp of grammar and makes them well-rounded adults.

Learning another language widens students’ horizons through the awareness of other cultures it makes pupils reflect on their own values and it helps them to develop a true sense of identity. More importantly, this contributes to their personal development as curious, open-minded, respectful, tolerant and responsible young people. I strongly believe that links with schools, exchanges and trips abroad are invaluable opportunities for pupils, as it makes them aware of the opportunities that are opened to them, which is essential in today’s global world.
