Personal Tuition and Grammar School Entrance Exam Preparation

Personal Tuition Schools are facing higher demands these days than ever and students aren't always being given the full attention they need to maximize their full potential in their studies. Many parents are therefore turning to personal tuition to give the child the full support and motivation needed to fulfill their potential and goals to maximize their academic achievement.

Why is Personal Tuition beneficial? Many children may require extra help to understand subjects that are being taught at school and may miss opportunities or not have the confidence to ask for help at school due to various reasons. This is how personal tuition can help your child as it allows them to have the extra support given to them at home, which will ultimately open up your child to a more positive learning experience and to gain confidence and motivation in their subjects studied.

The benefits of personal tuition include developing knowledge and understanding and increase in self-confidence which will, ultimately, improve grades. To start tuition well in advance before an exam will ensure the student gains more understanding of the subject and increasing confidence for the exam so they will be well prepared. All-in-all, personal tuition offers continuing support and advice towards a brighter future.

Entrance Exams Grammar Schools and private independent/ public schools, set different assessment tests but most are based around a common format of Maths, English and Verbal and non verbal Reasoning, with possibly science, languages, history and geography for entry at age 13.

Prep school entry, ages 4/7/8+ Prep schools often want children (age 6 or 7) to take a written test (usually in January) in the year before entry. At this level a nurturing approach is vital and tutors should be sensitive to the needs of young learners, building confidence and ensuring the required English, Maths (including verbal and non-verbal reasoning) standards are met.

Entrance tests Local independent (private) schools usually set their own entrance test, generally sat around Christmas of year 6, for admission into year 7 at age 11+ or year 9 at 13+. At 11, the exam tends to be limited to Maths, English and verbal reasoning. At 13, the entrance exam tends to include a wider range of subjects including compulsory English, Maths, Science, History, Geography and Religious Education. Optional papers are available in four foreign languages and Latin may be a requirement.

Eleven plus (11+) State run selective Grammar Schools, especially around the Trafford Borough of Manchester, now tend to set their own test to select pupils for entry into year 7. They use a test based on the eleven plus (11+) NFER exam and test Maths, verbal and non-verbal Reasoning and sometimes English (though the English test tends to be considered only for borderline cases in some schools). The 11+ test is very similar to the entrance tests used by the private schools and is usually sat in the autumn/winter (between mid-September - January depending on the school) of year 6.

Common Entrance (CE) Common Entrance exams for independent public schools can be set for admission ages of 11+ or 13+ and although marked by the schools themselves, exam papers are often set by the Independent School Exam Board. At 11, the exam tends to be limited to Maths, English and verbal reasoning whereas the 13+ exam includes a wider range of subjects including compulsory English, Maths, Science, History, Geography and Religious Education. Optional papers are available in four foreign languages and Latin may be a requirement.

Scholarship Exams Gifted children may be suitable for a scholarship award - the exam is usually a more challenging version of the Common Entrance Exam. Those who pass will be eligible for a reduction in school fees, so private tutoring can prove to be a very cost-effective investment.
