A DBS check allows an individual to prove they possess no criminal convictions. Formally known by the acronym CRB, or criminal record bureau, the Disclosure Barred Service is most often requested by employers as a way of checking the criminal record of a potential employee. In the United Kingdom every teacher will have been DBS checked - although this does not necessarily mean possessing a criminal record will disbar you from being a teacher, as minor infractions may be discounted by certain schools. ; A DBS will list all the convictions an individual holds: it will be up to potential employers to make a judgement based on this information. For a tutor at Tutor Hunt, the possession of an Enhanced DBS including the children's barred list check is mandatory.

There are however three different types of DBS checks: basic, standard and enhanced. The basic check shows both unspent convictions, and conditional cautions. Unspent convictions are those convictions that have not yet elapsed, or those permanently remain on record because they are of an extremely serious nature, such as violent crimes or serious sexual assaults. With the exception of such serious transgressions, all crimes will eventually be removed from the record, in line with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

A standard check will show both spent and unspent convictions, along with any cautions, reprimands, and final warnings. An enhanced check will show all the information the standard does, along with any supplementary information the police may think is relevant. An enhanced DBS will also reveal the barred list status of an individual. The barred lists show whether an individual is unfit to work with children or vulnerable adults.

Here at Tutor Hunt you will need an Enhanced DBS, we are able to obtain this for any tutor registered with us. The government`s Disclosure and barring service costs £38, and there is an additional fee of £4 for the umbrella body, leaving the total charge at £42. Our organisation does not take any charge, and makes no money providing tutors with DBS checks.

In order to begin the process, you will need to provide us with a copy of at least three of the following forms. One of these documents must be a valid Driving Licence or Passport and at least one of the other documents must include the address you use during the online Care Check application. These can be uploaded through our portal.

  • Passport.
  • Driving licence.
  • Birth Certificate.
  • Recent Utility Bill, no more than 3 months old, and not a mobile phone bill.
  • Bank Statement, no more than 3 months old.

You should scan and upload your 3 documents. Further details, including how to pay for the DBS application, can be found in the `Members Area` of your Tutor Hunt account, under the `Start DBS Application` link.

The umbrella body we currently use to authorise the DBS applications is Care Check, and the whole process takes between one and two weeks to complete. Tutor Hunt will notify you via email when we receive your documents, and when the application has been completed. At this point the blue DBS form will be posted to the address on your post office verified document.

The possession of an Enhanced DBS including the children's barred list check is mandatory at Tutor Hunt. After uploading an image of the DBS document to your account (via the verification section in the members area) your profile will then be live and appear within our search results. An indication will be placed on your profile, allowing parents and students to see you are DBS verified.
