I'm a qualified teacher of Modern Foreign Languages with an Honours degree in French with German from Durham University and a PGCE (Post-Graduate Certificate of Education) from Cambridge University. I have lived in both France and Germany, where I laid down good conversational levels on top of sound academic knowledge of the languages. Whilst abroad, and subsequently back in the UK, I taught EFL (English as a Foreign Language). I have moved into ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) in the FE and Adult Learning sector. In-between I have worked in the home raising my family. I enjoy meeting and getting along with people.
I see a teacher as a facilitator and motivator. Teaching material depends on the student's individual requirements. Basics can be taught and require the student's application to learn them, but the learning 'comes alive' when students try out and manipulate the particular features of language for themselves, whether it's through written exercises or a spoken exchange like role-play. And for this, they need, as we all do, their confidence built up through clear and reinforced explanation, patience, encouragement and praise; in other words, a 'can do' environment.
All ages/ levels welcome!
Availability: Weekdays.
Tutor from my own home, but will consider short travel.
Experience: I am familiar with state and independent schools, having taught French and German in both on fixed term contracts, up to and including A-Level. I later kept abreast of more recent curricular and syllabus changes through involvement in my own children's education - right up to and including university applications.
I have also worked in a variety of language schools teaching English as a Foreign Language, including preparation for most of the recognised exams, examining for IELTS, and also Business English.
I currently teach (Entry Level) English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to foreign adults (with City & Guild exams).
I also offer beginners' or 'holiday' French and German courses for adult learners. I have taught languages to staff and apprentices in businesses.
I can assist with Basic (English) Skills and Adult Literacy.
