Chemistry (gcse, adult-learner, a-level)
I have 5 years of experience in both the classroom and as a private tutor. My focus is on exam technique and past papers. I always adapt my teaching style to meet the needs of the learner, working with them to provide the best possible outcomes (A grades!!!).
I feel I am the ideal personal tutor due to my many and varied experiences in various forms of teaching. This began with demonstrating to undergraduates and mentoring students writing dissertations whilst studying for my Ph.D. Post completion of my PGCE I gained experience teaching 11-16 year olds in a mixed comprehensive secondary school. In my first years of teaching at Burnley College I was responsible for creating an Access to HE Biology course from scratch, which ran with a 100% pass rate and 100% excellence rating from students. Since being appointed as Head of Chemistry I have been responsible for all of the A-level Chemistry teaching at Burnley College. Responsibilities include mentoring NQT and PGCE Chemistry teachers, writing and developing the AS and A2 Chemistry schemes of work and administrating the entire coursework aspect of the Chemistry A level. I am also in the process of leading the setup of an internal peer observation and assessment scheme with staff volunteering to showcase particular aspects of good practice, an initiative of my own creation. During my time teaching Chemistry at Burnley College internal College assessments carried out to assess students satisfaction with lecturers performance (SPOCS) resulted in over 95% of students rating the Chemistry teaching as Excellent, with 100% rating it as excellent or good. Along with another member of staff I have founded the first Burnley College science club, aimed at provoking debate and discussion of the latest scientific developments while promoting an enthusiasm for science in general. These experiences, along with my genuine enthusiasm, knowledge of the latest innovations in teaching such as podcasting, twitter, facebook and use of video technology in lessons make me an ideal candidate for this position and will make me a genuine asset to the teaching faculty.
