Information about Ben

I am a Mathematics graduate from Cambridge University. After graduating, I worked in the IT industry, initially for a large corporation and then for an independent software house. I later formed my own company, specialising in developing applications for small- to medium-sized companies. I used the logical skills developed through studying Mathematics in my work as Business Analyst and Project Manager.
Since 2009, I have been tutoring Mathematics. I also study extensively to keep up to date with the latest mathematical ideas.
Outside work, my main interest is music, particularly singing. I belong to two choirs.

Availability: Any time.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: In my IT work I developed and delivered training courses for both colleagues and customers. I also provided personal tuition in Mathematics for many years, both on a professional basis and also to friends. After leaving the IT world, I taught for eight months in an after-school academy in New Malden, preparing children for 11+ and Common Entrance.
In the two years that I have been tutoring Mathematics, I have taught some 50 pupils on a one-to-one basis for both AS/A2 and GSCE, preparing them with great success for their examinations. I also tutor university students in Analysis, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations and Mathematical Methods, both ongoing and also for re-sits.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe in tailoring the teaching approach to each student’s needs and individual learning style. For adults, I work with them to develop a personalised programme to enable them to achieve their goals. For school children and university students, I discuss their aims with them - and with their parents, if required - to determine what topics need additional tuition and then to work out the appropriate programme. I advocate continuous assessment to measure the student’s progress. Closer to exams, the pupils will work through old papers. At this stage, strategic choices may be made to focus on the pupils strengths.
I have great passion for and a deep knowledge of Mathematics. My aim is always to get my students to enjoy the subject. Most importantly, they are encouraged to gain confidence in their own abilities by building on what they feel comfortable with. I believe that the right teacher can undo wrong learning very quickly.
Lessons take place at my students’ homes, or at my home in Kingston, where I have a quiet study. Assignments and homework are an integral part of my teaching: there can be no improvement without practice.
As well as one-to-one tutoring, I also offer revision classes for AS/A2 pupils in the Easter holidays from £120 per day. Please contact me for details.
