My full time occupation is spent as a Senior Principal Engineer within a large Communications company. I am 44 years of age and live in Uxbridge, West London with my wife. I can offer tutoring at the students home or at a predefined venue particularly if more than student attends.
I value an approach where i form a learning contract with the student. The objectives of this are to have a well defined plan of what we are going to achieve and to set commitments on both sides. I do this by setting up a clear experience in the students mind of what it will be like to achieve their learning goals and using that as a motivator for real progress. In my experience motivation is one of the greatest keys to achieving.
I also like to use analogies and the occasional use of metaphors as aid for understanding and retention. I have had great success with this approach.
I have a mobile whiteboard and flip-chart, the sheets of which can be left with the student for reflection and again, acting as an aid for retention.
