Information about Lucy

I am a 33 year old qualified primary school teacher currently working in a Bromley primary school. For the past 13 years I have tutored primary age children at evening and weekends in order to help them catch up or to extend their learning.

I pride myself on delivering fully differentiated tutoring sessions, with each child at the centre of all teaching and learning.

I have taught across all years in primary but my focus is now teaching Year 6. I have a range of KS1 and 2 resources ready to use for tutoring and will be able to demonstrate online resources to you and your child so that you can support your child throughout the week. I use current numeracy/literacy publications (which I provide) as a starting point and focus for lessons. We can then give more attention to concepts which are highlighted as problem areas.

Working near Newstead Woods and St Olaves, I am familiar with their entrance exams and how best to be coached for them. I have tutored children for both of these and other 11+ tests.

Having been a nanny for 4+ plus years to two children with special educational needs (primarily ASD and cerebral palsy) and having worked in special schools, I will happily tailor sessions to meet any additional needs your child may have.

Tutoring sessions (whether literacy or numeracy based) can mirror what you child is currently learning at school. Using their homework as a basis (or past reports/feedback from teachers) children can become more confident with tackling these challenges in future, independently. Alternatively, I can screen your child and assess exactly where their gaps in understanding are.

Each session will follow the same format of a standard school lesson, except that your child will receive 1:1 guidance and the learning will be adapted throughout the session in order to constantly challenge your child`s understanding.

Format of session:
-Review prior learning
-Address and challenge misconceptions
-Introduce and model new area of learning
-Child experiments with new skills and understanding through hands on experiences
-Application of skills in a formal piece of work
-Self assessment, marking the work and evaluating what achievements the child has made and child to self correct work through support and questioning
-Review of today`s sessions, child and adult to decide on next steps

Throughout it all we aim to have fun, I have always been told that sessions have the children look forward to the next session (through use of games and competition) and time goes quickly for the children. I’m a big fan of stickers and yet to meet a child who hasn’t shared my love of them!

In my experience, tutoring sessions tend to be most successful when both the child and parent(s) are keen to commit to and support the work done during the session. It is often a good idea to discuss tutoring sessions with your child before starting as they often have clear ideas of what they want to achieve and why.

I have recently attended training on `Growth Mindset` and am a huge believer in establishing a positive working relationship and approach to learning, especially children who feel that they`re not succeeded with their learning. I am most proud that parents frequently tell me how much fun their children have during our sessions, learning should be fun and something which children look forward to.

In the past I have worked with two children (either from the same family or friends) in order to share the cost of tutor sessions and to provide a bit of healthy competition!

If you require a short burst of tutoring (during either term or holiday time) or something more regular, please contact me for availability.

In line with Covid regulations, I’m happy to wear a visor and will bring hand sanitiser to each session. Where possible, I will have a set of resources just for your child, will quarantine them for 72 hours between different children or will clean them with wipes.
