Information about Joanne

TAKING ON NEW YEAR 12/13 STUDENTS NOW - If you need some additional input following a disrupted year of learning this year then please do get in contact. I can help you consolidate your learning and fill any gaps, as well as helping with exam-technique which will no doubt have largely been neglected this past year.

I am a highly qualified and experienced Teacher and Tutor, specialising in Psychology and essay writing and study skills. With a First class degree and Masters with Distinction in Psychology, and currently working towards a Masters in Education, I qualified as a Secondary School Teacher, gaining QTS in 2004. I have taught Psychology (as well as Geography) for the last 12 years and am confident in supporting learning of students studying a range of examining boards, although I specialise in the Psychology AQA syllabus.

I am able to tutor students as they study their Psychology A Level, supporting the work that they complete within school and for homework and helping them increase the depth of their understanding and spend time on exam and essay skills, which are often neglected within lesson time. I am also able to assist those students perhaps needing to re-sit their Psychology examinations, who need help increasing their understanding of content and fine-turning their essay-writing and revision skills. I have also successfully tutored students who have decided to take the whole Psychology A Level in one-year, whereby I am their only teacher/tutor, providing them with extensive tutoring in both content and skills as well as careful guidance in helping them plan their time and maintain their motivation levels.

Availability: ANY DAY OF THE WEEK - DURING THE DAY OR EVENING

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: I am a fully qualified teacher of Psychology and Geography, with over 10 years of teaching experience within the comprehensive, grammar and private sectors. I have taught in both the UK and Australia, and have also worked as a private tutor in Switzerland and the USA. I have been awarded a Certificate of Excellence by the Board of Studies (Australia) for my teaching and results, and was also nominated for Kent Teacher of the Year Award (2015). I was the Lead Teacher for Psychology in a Kent-based Grammar School and have now recently moved to Oxfordshire where I am teaching GCSE and A Level Psychology (AQA). In addition to my subject knowledge, it is my intricate knowledge of examination criteria, and expectations of exam responses that allows me to provide such effective support and feedback to tutees.

I offer tailored private tuition to students doing GCSE, A Level and IB courses in Psychology. With my Psychology background, I am also able to assist students in effective study and revision techniques, as well as essay writing tutoring for all subjects. I am passionate about my subjects and inspiring and helping others to feel more confident in their understanding of these subjects.

I offer a student-centered approach, where each session is moulded to cater to the needs of the individual. I can assist students in their understanding of content knowledge and helping them to understand the expectations of the examiner. I focus on successful exam techniques and how to apply their knowledge to different styles of question. As part of my tutoring, I regularly mark students work, discussing feedback and ensuring the student knows how to improve and progress. I am absolutely confident in my ability to help students improve their knowledge, understanding and exam preparation, ensuring that they go into their exams confident in their own abilities.

I am happy to tutor at my home or at yours depending on what best suits both of our needs/commitments and depending on the days/times. However, if I travel to you, I do ask for a financial contribution towards my travel time (depending on the distance).

Joanne was brilliant with our son and he came out of our session very positive. Unfortunately health issues prevented us continuing but I am sure that Joanne would have achieved the results she promised.

I contacted Jo to ask her to tutor my son for Psychology A Level on the basis of the highly positive reviews others had given her on this website. I have not been disappointed! Jo is an absolute gem and everything I had hoped to find in a tutor. She is calm, friendly, enthusiastic, very well-organised and extremely knowledgeable about her subject. She is also a brilliant tutor for students with special educational needs. As a result of his ADHD, my son had fallen behind significantly in his work during Year 12. Jo kindly met me before starting to teach him to discuss his needs and to gain a clearer understanding of the challenges he experiences. She also took the time to read his diagnostic report in full. Jo is one of the few teachers my son has had who has really taken on board the level of difficulty and frustration experienced by a bright lad with severe ADHD. She has clear (and high) expectations but is also very understanding, helping him to find ways to manage his difficulties, in effect acting not only as a tutor, but also as a mentor. My son really enjoys his lessons with Jo; he finds them interesting, engaging and hugely beneficial. Thanks to her, he now feels much more confident of achieving a good A Level grade, which will enable him to study Psychology at university.
