Information about James

Head of department and faculty leader available for film and media studies tutoring!

Throughout my career I have developed my teaching skills considerably and have learnt how to apply these in a number of different roles. Having previously studied film theory and production at higher education, I have been introduced to a wide range of film and media research techniques and video production skills and I have found a genuine passion for passing this knowledge and expertise onto my students.

Having previously been employed as a Head of Media and Head of Performing Arts, I appreciate that all students learn differently and I take this into account when devising and delivering learning programmes.

I have a wealth of resources that can be tailored and adapted to support teaching and ultimately meet the needs of individual students to help ensure that progress is made throughout my sessions.

I specialise in film and media theory and film editing and can support students when learning Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro. I can offer learning programmes across all key stages and can offer online lessons if requested.

Availability: Monday - Friday (evenings)
Saturday - Sunday (all day, subject to availability)

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: I have extensive experience of teaching Film and Media at KS2 - KS5 and I am currently employed as a videographer in Higher Education.

I have been an educator for 10 years and have devised and delivered learning programmes at all key stages. I have held positions as a classroom teacher, subject leader for film and media and faculty leader for performing arts.

I have experience of leading and delivering the following learning programmes: KS3 Media Studies, GCSE Media Studies, GCSE Film Studies, BTEC Level 2 Creative and Digital Media Production, A Level Media Studies, A Level Film Studies, BTEC Level 3 Creative Media Production.

I have also been in charge of delivering the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) for post-16 students and have tutored students throughout the UCAS application process.

I have a strong record of raising attainment, having single-handedly moved GCSE Media Studies A*-C grades from 38% to 65% and in-line with the national average at my first school. With a much larger cohort at my most recent school, I took over a struggling subject and raised the GCSE Media Studies A*-C percentage by 30% - the most improved subject at the end of the academic year. I achieved similar results at post-16 level and ensured that students completed their A Level Media Studies course with 93% of students gaining A-C grades.

`The children thoroughly enjoyed the lessons and looked forward to them each week. James carefully planned for each of these lessons - basing the learning around topics that we were teaching in class. The impact on the children`s literacy skills was immediate, clear and purposeful; they readily used the skills learned in these classes in other areas of their learning.

One of the reasons the sessions were such a success was due to James` flexibility and creativity in delivery and organisation of resources.`

We found James just weeks before my son`s A-levels exams and we are so glad we did. I was a little worried about having online sessions due to our location but it wasn`t a problem. James is a thorough, dedicated, knowledgable and engaging tutor. My son has definitely benefited from having had his guidance. :)
