Information about Lizzie
I have been a school teacher since 1981. I have taught Maths (KS 2,3 and 4) Geography (KS 3 and 4) and Primary (mainly KS2) More recently I was a part of the Government`s One To One scheme and tutored over 130 students aged 6 to 16 in schools in West and North Yorkshire.
I also have work experience in Construction Management and can relate Maths to developing skills in construction.
I live in Ilkely in Yorkshire and can travel to Leeds and Bradford or see students at my home. I am also experienced in online lessons via Skype.
Availability: I am semi-retired so I can be very flexible as to times - please ask. I live right in the centre of Ilkley and students can come to my house, or I can come to theirs. I am also happy to do Skype classes.
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: I have taught Maths to children up to 16, adults in drop-in centres and evening classes, and groups of FE students. I have also taught adults from Level 2 to Entry 1 and people with learning disabilities. People from 6 to 65.
I am passionate about engaging both children and adults in learning Maths. Many people think that they will never be able to do Maths - often they just need help to overcome their fears.
I understand what students need to know to give them confidence and help them to pass exams.Sometimes they need help with reading and understanding the questions. Many people are helped by understanding that there are usually several ways of solving a problem - I can help them choose the one which is right for them. It`s okay to use concrete materials to help with calculations even when you are a grown up! I teach a lot of mental Maths, usually in the form of games and fun activities.
I don`t teach by rote (except for times tables!) - I believe that learning Maths is like building a wall - you need to get the foundations right and then each level is the firm basis to build the next layer. I help people develop the strategies which work for them. Many adults know more Maths than they realise and bringing out their confidence is an important part of teaching.
I can also teach for SATs, Foundation Level GCSEs and Adult Numeracy Levels 1 and 2 exams. If you need help with that Maths qualification, I can get you there!
