Hello, my name is Emily and I am an enthusiastic and supportive saxophone (alto/tenor/sop), oboe and Music Theory tutor, able to teach grades 1-8, both classical and jazz, with the aim to make each lesson fun and adapted to the individual. I am a Music graduate from the University of Manchester, received 1st class in my final year saxophone performance module, and 2:1 overall.

I have a relaxed teaching style and can accommodate various levels of expertise and learning speed. I first ascertain what the student hopes to gain from lessons and structure lessons to best achieve those objectives. I have 100% pass rate, with most pupils achieving merits and distinctions and have experience teaching grades 1-5 saxophone and oboe with both children and mature students.

Availability: weekdays and weekends, 9am-9pm.

Tutoring classical and jazz saxophone (both alto and tenor), and music theory - ABRSM graded and jazz theory. I also have taught jazz improvisation, composition and general performance skills. Age range: ages 9 - 61. The lessons and goals will be different for each student depending on age and experience, so preparing lesson plans before the lesson is crucial to suit the individual student and what they were looking to achieve, also working closely with the parents to build up good relationships in order to create a healthy, fun, and productive learning atmosphere. For many of my mature students they have had less interest in learning to read music so we took an aural approach with the saxophone, learning jazz or pop pieces, scales and improvising by ear - without using sheet music. Some mature students did want to learn some theory and how to read music, so I have created many theory worksheets and information pages for them. At the end of the lesson I send an email with what went well during the lesson and what needs work, and if they are happy to receive homework I set that weekly. I always try to make the lessons fun and interactive and keep the students engaged.

Performance Experience:

University of Manchester Big Band - Contemporary jazz repertoire, tenor 1 seat (2018-2019), and tenor 2 seat (2017-2018). Band manager; this role involved booking gigs, organising auditions, booking masterclasses and taking registers. Previously lead small bands within this band and have arranged music for our vocal showcase gig in June at Manchester Academy. We performed at The Domino club in Leeds, Manchester Academy and within the University of Manchester at the Martin Harris Centre.

MSC big band - have been a member of this 25 piece big band since 2016 - present. We have performed gigs at Band on the Wall, Manchester Academy, O2 Apollo and many more. I have played alto 1, 2, and tenor 1 and 2 in this band.

I also run my own band Laga Runa, which I compose music for and perform saxophone in. It is an 7 piece genre blending group, merging the likes of jazz, hip-hop, R & B, Afro-beat, soul and World jazz. Consisting of Vocals, Tenor Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Keys, Bass and Drums. We have performed at Fuel Cafe Bar and Band on the Wall, and are due to perform at Haus and the Night and Day Cafe. I have also taken part in many jazz improvisation workshops lead by Soweto Kinch and Camilla George, and I performed at the Dordogne International Jazz Summer school in France, 2017 and 2018.
