Information about John
I am an experienced teacher and tutor offering private tuition in GCSE and A-Level History. I am currently a Teacher of History at an "outstanding" rated secondary school and an examiner, with the standard, clarity and consistency of my marking rated "exemplary."
I am positive, friendly and reliable, and have demonstrated consistent success working with students from diverse backgrounds. I have extensive knowledge of world history, and exam assessment objectives and mark schemes. This enables me to support students in developing their confidence, core knowledge and exam technique. As a result all of my A-level students have gone on to secure a place at university.
In addition, I have a background in academia, previously working as a Lecturer in American History at the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University, and completed my PhD in 2017. I therefore have expertise in varied education roles and able to offer advice and feedback on university applications, including personal statements.
Availability: I am currently available to teach Monday and Wednesday evenings, and can offer additional availability in school holidays and in the run up to exams.
Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience: I have worked as a Teacher of History for the past three years, and currently employed at a secondary school in the north-west, rated "outstanding" in December 2022. I was previously employed as a Lecturer at the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University. I have worked as a GCSE and A-Level examiner since 2017.
As an experienced examiner and teacher, I am adept at supporting students` with improving their essay-writing and exam technique. I am knowledgeable about exam specifications, assessment objectives and mark schemes. I utilise varied strategies with my students including the latest recall and retention techniques, effective planning and time management, and how to structure extended writing using evidence to support balanced and sustained judgements. This enables the majority of my students to access the highest attainment levels.
I am always looking to enhance my teaching, and at present I am enrolled on the Historical Association`s Teacher Development Program, which is designed to support the teaching of ambitious and rigorous history.
