Information about Barry
I have worked as a one-to-one tutor in mathematics and further mathematics for over 35 years in specialist tutorial colleges in Oxford. This has given me extensive knowledge as to how the examiners present the examination questions so that I can prepare the student for the different variations that might appear. I can either help with difficulties a student is having in their course at school, or I can teach the whole course from the beginning. My professional two-camera online-tutorial set-up makes for easy communication and allows the student to see what I am writing on my desk. Over 90% of my retake students improve their performance by two grades and over 75% achieve the top two grades. I am dedicated to getting my students to focus as examinations approach. I try to create a calm non-judgemental atmosphere so that the student becomes more able to take risks, an important component of successful problem solving. At the very least, my students gain confidence from learning that error-making can be informative and leads to more productive choices.
I have a master of science degree by thesis in mathematical physics and have published several academic papers on quantum physics. My latest acceptance is a paper on the nature of the photon for Modern Physics Letters B journal . My academic books on quantum physics have been published by World Scientific Publishing and my mathematical puzzle columns for The Daily Telegraph, Prospect magazine, and New Scientist have proved popular with readers in the UK.
