TUTORING `FACE TO FACE` ONLY

I have been successfully tutoring English and Verbal Reasoning for the 11+ Entrance exam, (as well as KS2 English/SATS preparation), for the past few years, with students sitting for/being offered places at a range of leading Independent Schools in Surrey/London/Kent/Berkshire, including RGS, St George`s, Reeds, Reigate Grammar, Epsom, St John`s, CLFS, Hamptons, Charterhouse, Seaford College, St Catherine`s, GHS, Tormead (Scholarship/Bursary), Sir William Perkin`s, Prior`s Field (Full Academic Scholarship), Claremont Fan (Full Academic Scholarship), Manor House School, Salesian, Churchers, King Edward`s and Cranmore Senior School (Academic Scholarships).

I have also successfully tutored for St Paul`s Girls` School, North London Collegiate School, Godolphin and Latymer, Francis Holland School, South Hampstead High School, Eton, Tonbridge School, Reading School (a highly competitive state grammar school for boys in Berkshire); Wilson`s School and Sutton Grammar.

Students come to me from a wide range of primary schools, both independent and state.

For a child to succeed in the 11+ Entrance exam, it is essential that they have a well developed and varied vocabulary; have strong spelling, punctuation and grammar skills; be used to writing using different sentence structures and in different styles, as well as being able to work through worded problems and recognise techniques used to solve them.

My role is to identify their weaker areas and target them for extra practice, improving their understanding of what is required and helping them work in time-limited conditions. The more your child practises, the better prepared they will be for the exam and the more their confidence will grow.

I also help with interview practice/technique which, for some schools, forms part of their admissions process.

For KS2 children, it may be that they are falling behind because they haven`t grasped the basics; they may be struggling with certain aspects of the Literacy Curriculum or perhaps they need to be stretched to fulfil their potential. I can help identify gaps in their knowledge and address these accordingly with lots of encouragement.

For SATS, we will work together to ensure that the child is fully conversant in all aspects of the SPAG and Reading tests, building on what they have been learning in school, so they are able to approach these formal tests with confidence.

As well as working through Tutor Hunt, a great deal of my work comes from personal recommendations and repeat business within a family. Additional references from past students` parents are available on request. Please do not hesitate to ask.

As well as being a tutor, I have worked work part-time in a private prep school in Surrey (Years 5 & 6) offering support in English and Maths and for over ten years, worked in a state primary school (KS2), offering one to one/group support within the classroom. I also ran a Gifted and Talented Literacy/English group for those children who needed to be stretched and intervention groups for those who needed to improve their Spellings, Reading, Writing and Comprehension skills.

Before having my family, I was Communications Manager/Press Officer for a leading royal charity, where excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, were essential.

Availability: I am available during the day/straight after school/evenings, mainly working from my own home, but very occasionally can travel during quieter periods, which is usually just after the 11+ exams in January. (This will incur an extra charge). Also, weekends, depending on availability at the time of contact. It changes, so please do ask. I aim to be as flexible as possible.

Sarah tutored our 10 year old in advance of school entrance exams. We felt that he needed a little extra tuition in English. What our son received was not only great English tuition but some amazing feedback on his approach and effort, which he really needed. His school were perhaps a little down on him, and this was affecting his confidence. Sarah built a really great rapport, which we could see really built confidence in our son. From having conversations with his school head that he might not get into his chosen schools, he ended up receiving offers from all three schools that he applied to. I have no doubt that Sarah`s tuition really improved his English and his approach to the subject. But more than that, it really built his confidence and that had a huge impact on his entrance exam results. I have no hesitation in recommending Sarah as a tutor.

A thoroughly excellent and highly experienced tutor. Sessions are well planned and structured, learning materials and homework tasks are focused on learning needs. She is hugely experienced with in-depth knowledge of the assessment process. She has excellent rapport with our son and targets support, giving specific feedback to build confidence. Highly recommended.

I was really pleased with the progress my son made in Sarah`s lessons. Within a short space of time, she gave my son the help he needed to boost his confidence ready for the Eleven Plus. Sarah is a dedicated teacher who I would recommend to help unpick trickier aspects of English.
