Information about Deborah

I am an experienced English Head of Department and Examiner for AQA and Edexcel and live in Beaconsfield. I offer face to face and online lessons via Skype or Zoom. In addition, I am exceptionally experienced teaching the 9-1 specification GCSE English Language/Literature and Common Entrance Exams, 11 and 13 plus. Previous work experienced has encompassed Primary and Secondary Education. I am also an established Private Tutor. I understand the importance of creating stimulating lessons where the learner engages and is motivated. My student success rate is very high and my experience stems many years. I enjoy teaching and the whole learning process. I believe that results can be achieved as I prioritise the learning goals of the student. I have an excellent proven track record where student achievement and progression has been met.

Availability: Flexible at the moment Mon-Sat am and pm.

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: I am experienced at teaching children on a one to one basis and I have also taught children with dyslexia and hold a Certificate in this area. Furthermore, I have a Specialist Advanced Teaching Diploma in Literacy and have enabled both young and mature adults to gain relevant qualifications in Functional Skills English, GCSE English, and Access to Higher Education courses, Creative Writing, CV, Interview Techniques and A Levels. I also have relevant teaching experience in teaching English as a Second Language. I am particularly skilled at exam preparation including mock papers, revision techniques and examination timings. I am experienced at working with most exam boards such as Edexcel, AQA, OCR, IGCSE, WJEC EDUQAS, EDI, NCFE and City & Guilds.

I believe that learning should be interesting and enjoyable. I feel that a good start to any learning programme is to ascertain the areas for development. This may take place as an assessment which is normally written but can also be carried out verbally. I also take into account the learning styles that best suit the learner be it visual or auditory. A learning Plan can then be constructed which has the objectives of the student; to their satisfaction. My aim from that point is to enable the student to reach their goals, develop confidence with their English and enjoy the success in getting the exam results they desire.

Deborah has a very friendly approach and is working with our son to tutor him for his 11 plus exam.

My son required extra help with Eng Lang GCSE exam. During the first visit Deborah told my son that his Eng paper (mock) had been marked too generously. This immediately knocked my sons self confidence. Deborah has a very set way of teaching and my son felt that pressured to work her way, so much so that my son showed her a piece of work during his last session and she blatantly told him that she would not comment as it was not structured the way she wanted. Again this was disappointing. Furthermore Deborah insisted on cash in hand every time , when I suggested bank payment she insisted on cash. Overall not a very good experience for my son .

I taught your son Isaac for only over a couple of sessions and you indicated that you wanted support for your son’s upcoming exams in the summer of 2023. I immediately informed you that time was quite short but that with intense support, I would be able to prepare your son for the exam. In the first session, I carried out an assessment which indicated that he was quite weak in understanding the exam questions and he was unaware of the subject terminology required to pass the exam successfully. At this stage, I provided you with the information and devised a study programme with both you and your child’s consent. Your son did not engage with the lessons, and he stated that he was ‘not’ going to implement any of the techniques we were working on in the exam. I was quite baffled with his statement. He was also very dismissive during the sessions and did not engage.

In relation to his teacher’s mark for the mock paper he completed at school, I discussed with your son and as you are both aware, my comments were not in any way negative, they were reflective of the mark scheme and my experience as an Examiner.

In the final 5 minutes of the session, Isaac presented me with a question that he had worked on in his school and I informed him that it would be beneficial if I had a copy of the extract he had worked on in order to mark this piece of work. He was unable to produce it. I did not have time to read his work properly as we were finalising and discussing homework. Additionally, please note it is ‘unethical’ for tutors to mark student’s work when it is supposed to be marked by their teacher in their school. This is very different to a tutor providing comments on schoolwork and should not be confused.

In relation to the ‘cash’ payment, I indicated from the outset my preference for cash payment, if you were unhappy with this arrangement, then you should not have proceeded with the booking. The lesson was f2f and for many tutors that is the normal method of payment. In fact, you attempted to pay with ‘foreign currency’; I then was short of payment for a week and had delivered the lesson. I felt this behaviour from a parent was untrustworthy.

Deborah has been so helpful with preparation for my English Language GCSEs. I started feeling much more confident after just a couple of lessons. She is very knowledgeable as well as always being punctual and well-prepared for the lessons. I highly recommend Deborah.
