Information about Amy

Hi, my name is Amy and I have been working as a private tutor intermittently since 2006. I am currently offering tutoring in maths (KS3/GCSE) and science (KS3/GCSE), and A level Physics in the Southsea/Portsmouth area.

I have a degree in Physics from the University of Oxford (2011) and a PhD in biomechanics from the University of Portsmouth (2015). I am also a qualified science teacher (PGCE completed with a scholarship from the Institute of Physics in 2018) and have experience teaching up to GCSE level secondary schools and at undergraduate level at the University of Portsmouth.

I would consider myself to be a physics specialist with both a strong academic background in this area, but also a varied work experience that enables me to add context and a breadth of knowledge to my tutoring sessions. Aside from working as a teacher and lecturer, I have also worked as an engineer, and as a researcher. I have worked on projects in collaboration with both commercial partners and within elite sport. I have always had a passion for sport (particularly gymnastics) and have been a qualified coach for over 20 years. I have had the opportunity to work with a wide variety of people through my coaching and teaching experiences and this has allowed me to develop several different approaches when teaching difficult topics.

Whether you are looking for a couple of one-off sessions to cover a particularly challenging topic, some additional help in the lead up to exams, or for longer-term tutoring I would be very happy to help.

Amy has really helped our daughter and is continuing to do so - she is reliable, committed, easy to get along with - I can’t talk to the physics part as I don’t understand it but our daughter says it’s definitely helping !
