Information about Diane
LITERACY SPECIALIST IN HARINGEY
I am a literacy specialist, working with adults of all ages. I teach reading and comprehension, writing skills, handwriting and study skills. I work with all abilities, but focus on work with adults who are struggling with basic skills, to enable them to enjoy reading and writing and to take charge of their lives. Most of my students have difficulties of some kind (e.g., dyslexia, autism and learning disabilities) or just got lost in the educational system. My job is to lead them out of the maze.
Tutoring Experience
I began teaching literacy skills to neighbours on my inner city housing estate, then went on to get the CELTA and teach English to teenagers at a London college. I set up a homework club on my estate, helping primary and secondary pupils with English and basic skills, which led to my return to university to get my PGCE and QTS. I have taught English in primary schools (as part of a SEN team), Pupil Referral Units, in community centres, in EFL colleges and as a private tutor. I currently work full-time as a private literacy and English tutor.
Tutoring Approach
I believe in taking the struggle out of learning. My students are adults who have had a hard time and have thought that things were never going to get better. I am happy to prove them wrong. Whatever level you`re at, that`s where we start. And the progress begins immediately, with the first lesson.
I aim to provide pain-free progress. Even if you`ve had trouble in the past and think you can`t get anywhere, I will show you that learning is easier than you think. I use many different methods and activities to make lessons enjoyable and use materials that reflect the interests of the student. I create my own worksheets, flashcards and games, tailored to each individual.
