Information about Cara
I am a fully trained Primary School teacher, with 12 years combined experience of teaching Key Stage 2 and supporting vulnerable young people. I have a lot of experience of working with children with learning difficulties, particularly those with low levels of concentration and ADHD.
My passion is children and young people and I firmly believe in an approach to education whereby I work with my pupils to build confidence and reduce anxiety. The relationship between teacher and pupil is fundamental in the learning process. I aim to get to know my pupils, their interests, their learning styles and what motivates them to learn in order to plan fun, engaging lessons with clear shared objectives and learning outcomes. I am empathetic and approachable, young people enjoy learning with me in a supportive and challenging way.
I encourage all my pupils to be active learners and critical thinkers. In order to learn, pupils have to be both mentally and physically active so that rather than listening to information, they take on responsibility for their own learning. With support they find solutions, make connections and create their own interpretations which leads to a more comprehensive understanding. The learning that occurs actively leads to an ability to think critically.
Availability: I am available Monday to Friday for day time or evening lessons.
Willing to travel: 5 miles
Experience: I graduated from the University of Glasgow with a 2:1 Masters in English Language, then trained as a Primary School teacher at Newcastle University. I taught Key Stage 2 pupils in a Primary School in Gateshead and introduced new English schemes of work to boost reading and writing skills across the school. I also took on the role of Maths Coordinator, monitoring lessons and providing feedback to teachers to improve standards. I then moved onto my role as Youth Support Coordinator, setting up a service for young cancer patients at the RVI to provide support throughout their treatment and beyond. This entailed liaising with schools for home schooling, delivering confidence and body image workshops, arranging conferences, peer support events, youth forums among many other things. Many young people were feeling very scared, vulnerable and isolated, a lot of my work with them was based on confidence building and advocating for their rights as a young person.
