Information about Andrew
I have taught A level Biology in a large sixth-form College for a number of years and am fully up-to-date with the new linear A level. My experience as a tutor has allowed me to become familiar with (nearly) all the subtle differences between the major examination boards and most tutees attend Peter Symonds (Eduqas), King Edward VI School (Edexcel) or Barton Peveril (AQA).
Availability: While social distancing measures are in place, I am offering tuition online via Skype. My screen is shared with the tutee, so changes can be viewed in real time. I use an HD webcam, drawing tablet and interactive whiteboard to annotate drawings, diagrams, notes, past paper questions and PowerPoints. All the resources used and developed in our tutorials can be immediately shared after each session.
My current regular availability is as follows:
- Monday 12:15-13:30 (fortnightly),
- Monday 13:45-15:00 (weekly),
- Wednesday 12:15-13:15 (fortnightly),
- Wednesday 13:30-15:00 (fortnightly) and
- Thursday 12:15-13:45 (weekly).
The fee shown is for tutoring during the daytime. Regular evening tuition is charged at £65/hour, but at the moment I only have daytime availability.
I offer tuition throughout term time, and during most academic and bank holidays.

Experience: The removal of January modules, and AS exams in several sixth-form Colleges mean that it is more important than ever for students to be thoroughly prepared for their final exams. My Masters in Education looked at the factors that lead to outstanding exam outcomes in sixth-form biology students with a particular focus on the techniques that help students:
- demonstrate their knowledge and understanding,
- apply knowledge to unfamiliar situations and
- analyse, interpret and evaluate scientific information.
In the 2016 examinations, just over 65% of my students achieved A*-B grades - approximately 15% above the national average. For all my classes the `value-added` was within the top 10% nationally with some classes achieving within the top 1%. In 2017, while teaching the new linear A-level specification for the first time, the percentage of high grades and value added was the same for my classes and nearly all of my private tutees achieved A*-B grades at A-level. In 2017, 2018 and 2019 the majority of my regular tutees achieved A*-B at A-level.
I can offer specialist support for those students:
-required to write the 25 mark synoptic essay as part of their final examinations.
-applying to Oxbridge and for Vet/Medicine or Dentistry (personal statements and mock interviews).
-who would benefit from marking of, and detailed feedback on mock examination papers.

Andrew has tutored my daughter for Biology A`level since September 2020 and has been excellent. The lessons were well-planned - she always knew what was going to be covered and was asked what topics she wanted to focus on during each session. Due to Covid restrictions the lessons were all virtual which was a bit of a challenge to start with but was well managed and was at least as effective as face-to-face tuition. Andrew`s coverage of each topic was very thorough and his obvious passion for the subject was really engaging. The fact that he is a subject specialist and only tutors Biology was a real advantage and I would recommend this when searching for a tutor. In addition to providing excellent tuition for my daughter, Andrew was also good at providing feedback to me as a parent and would arrange a half-termly phone call to make sure I was aware of her progress and how best to support her. My daughter has just sat her A`level exams and felt well-prepared and confident. So if you are looking for a Biology tutor I would highly recommend Andrew

Andrew is more than a tutor very knowledgable in his subject. Despite taking on my daughter only for the second year after a very difficult first year, he quickly consolidated her first year knowledge, then despite the impact of COVID, has just guided her from a D CAG to an A in the autumn exams. He is sensitive to a students needs and provided support when needed for queries outside the sessions. He is an excellent communicator, very organised with his material and a calming and inspiring influence on his students. I cannot recommend him high enough.

Andrew has been a fantastic tutor. He was always organised and prompt to respond to and questions or queries I had. His sessions are always well structured, focusing on both learning new theory and going over exam questions to solidify knowledge of previous areas. With great focus on wording and the level of detail needed to gain marks. Andrew also provided support and resources beyond our lessons which was very helpful. I would highly recommend Andrew to anyone!
