Hey guys!

My name is Arenma and before you let me start tutoring you here are a few things I would like for you to know about me.

I started tutoring when I was 15 years old (bit early I know).

I started as a Maths tutor at an orphanage called Arrows of God Orphanage in Lagos, Nigeria. Here, I tutored maths to primary school students who were preparing for their entrance exams into secondary school. It was my first time tutoring anyone and seeing the joy on the kids` faces when they understood a topic or got a question right was the most fulfilling thing ever for me.

This is something I carried into sixth form with me and was fortunate enough to find fulfilment in tutoring here also. I was an academic mentor during my time at sixth form for maths so younger students as well as classmates who were struggling with the subject would come to me for assistance and I would help them out.

I held a similar role when I started studying Business and Management with a Year in Industry at The University of Kent where I achieved a 2:1. I was made an academic mentor in my second year there and would assist younger students and some of my peers who were struggling with the course. This meant that I went from tutoring just maths to tutoring, accounting, statistics, economics and other subjects of the like that fell under Business and Management. This was quite the test for me but I was able to help my tutees improve their understanding of the modules and consequently, their grades.

Around this time, I began taking on more private clients across the different subjects I had already been tutoring i.e. maths, economics, business etc.

In all my years of tutoring I have learnt a lot about how to effectively communicate with different people to ensure they understand what is being taught. Effective communication only happens when the recipient of the information fully understands what is being communicated. Learning this influenced my teaching style a lot.

I realised that if I was going to get the best out of the students, I would have to simplify the topics I was teaching. How I execute this will often depend on whether I am teaching a class or doing a one-to-one session with a student but the aim is always to take complex topics and simplify them for the students to understand not take a complex topic and then use big words and jargon to explain it to them to make myself sound smart.
