Information about Tim

Bringing a wealth of tutoring and teaching experience including the new A Level syllabus in Computer Science, Computing, ICT as well as Mathematics, I have prepared hundreds of students for an effective start at a range of British Universities. My versatility and creativity shine through my tutoring which is all about tailoring an individual approach for each tutee which is further strengthened by my previous career in IT.

Having written many IT exams and tests, my expertise extends to preparing for examinations. I have a keen understanding of how students can best satisfy examiners, enabling me to bring students to a peak, so that they can excel on the day.

With me, students will raise their achievements in level 1, 2 or 3 courses such as: A/AS-Levels, IB, Foundation, GCSE, Access, BTEC or Diploma through OCR, AQA and WJEC exam boards. Moreover my experience of advising students on UK university progression will further assist them in how to approach admissions tutors so they choose the course and university that is right for them.

Recent Successes

- Substantial development of a `retake A Level` student in the old Computing syllabus of OCR. This student has consistently achieved 85% plus in exam-like tests in the run up to June/July exams.

- Effective long term development of an A Level student`s ability to deliver to a project moving this student from E level outcome to just below 50%. Support is choice of technologies and tailored tutoring in these.

- Timely remedial intervention of analysis and design techniques mid-point in project to more fully focus the process. Review and improvement of `project log` to assist later move into fuller documentation of the project.

- Language-based assistance of an international student in the development and fuller use of specialised English of Computer Science for his AS Computer Science. Regular reinforcement of key concepts and the means to express.

- Assured and confident development of a GCSE student in Computing to tune his enthusiasm into the highest possible academic outcome. Anticipating later delivery in progression to A Level Computer Science, having nurtured and honed this student`s flair in the subject.

- Consistent, well-engaged development in GCSE ICT of a student who had been out of the standard process of education for a period of time.

Experience: As part of the A Level syllabus, the student project constitutes typically 30% of the results and is an extremely testing part of the total exam: starting early on the project, even as early as July or August just after AS exams, will boost outcomes in the following academic year. A key consideration is choosing an effective project subject at an appropriate level of complexity which is no easy matter. Expert guidance in this at the earliest stage will pay off greatly later. Regular review and guidance in the project will pre-empt a hurried and uncomfortable completion in the exam period of the academic year end. With an extensive experience garnered over 10 years, I am insightful of the diverse needs of each and every student. I have much expertise in tutoring International Students, where I adapt my materials for those whose first language is other than English. Advising and directing on a variety of subjects and at range of levels, I have over the years developed materials for others as well as my own teaching. I have taught and tutored at four colleges: Bartholomews, Bellerby’s Brighton, Northbrook and South Downs all in Sussex, UK.

As well as 1-to-1 sessions I make it a practice to provide follow-up and support so that the learning process is continuous and fully engaged. With the experience of leading many tutees in 1-to-1 sessions I am able to adapt to the needs of new tutees.
