Information about Emily-rose

I am an experienced private tutor (100+ hours over the last 2 years) and UCL graduate in French and Italian. I am now training to become a doctor on the fast-track Graduate Entry Medicine course at St George`s University of London. I am currently looking to take on just one student from Tutor Hunt, as the rest of my schedule is full from clients through another agency.

My academic background is broad, having studied all arts A levels and attained a languages degree before pursuing medicine. I have an equal love of the arts and the sciences and can help students with both. Between degrees I worked for two years as a healthcare assistant, then as an events organiser for a charity. I live in Streatham, London and am on medicine placements around South London full time on weekdays. I have over four years of experience working with a student with autism and learning dififculties, so I have a special interest in special educational needs.

Lots of students and families hire a tutor at pivotal times in the student`s life such as in the run up to important exams or when the student is falling behind. I meet lots of students who are feeling a little stressed and some may not always be keen to work with a tutor, especially younger students. I work hard to create interesting and engaging sessions for students to combat this so that my lessons are something students look forward to, not dread! Whatever subject I teach I always find ways to bring it to life, which is not only more enjoyable for the student but also gives them a deeper conceptual understanding of a topic. I aim to create a relaxed atmosphere and I do not like to be strict this may be necessary in the classroom where a teacher needs to control a large class, but for private tutoring I prefer to bring fun and humour to the lessons and encourage genuine enjoyment of the subject.

I am now on my second degree and have been an exam machine myself for many years now! I understand what students are going through and how to succeed in examinations, from a good understanding of the concepts to getting the timings right on the day. In our first session I will create a plan with the student tailored to their exam board, which we can adjust as we go depending on progress and the student`s strengths and weaknesses. I start with a good conceptual understanding of topics, but if students are preparing for exams I always have one eye on this and introduce exam technique early, consolidating learning with practice questions and past papers as we go.

Availability: I prefer to work on weekend daytimes and currently have a slot on Saturday afternoons/Sunday mornings, however weekday evenings can be negotiated so do still get in touch if you think I would be a good fit for your learning needs.

Willing to travel: 3 miles

Experience: I have over two years of experience as a private tutor and have delivered over 100 hours of one-to-one tuition.

Subjects offered:
· French and Italian: I have a 2:I BA from UCL in French and Italian and can offer fun and engaging lessons for exams or for casual learners. I will aim to get you talking as much as possible right from the beginning. We will bring the language to life through culture as much as possible using French and Italian literature, music, youtube videos and film to immerse yourself in the language.
· Biology and Chemistry: Over the past year I have delivered many hours of private tuition in Biology and Chemistry, particularly for A level students aiming to attain a place at medical school. As a fourth year medical student I have an in depth knowledge of both Biology and Chemistry. Some students find the concepts particularly difficult to wrap their head around, especially at A level where there is a big step up from GCSE and some students` attainment falls. I focus on conceptual understanding of the topics rather than rote learning - often this one-on-one time to talk through tricky concepts with an experienced tutor will be enough to significantly improve a student`s grade.
· Medical School Entrance Exams: This year I have begun to deliver private tuition for the UKCAT, BMAT and GAMSAT with great success so far my two UKCAT students who have already sat their tests gained scores of 678 and 720 respectively. It is not long since I sat these exams myself and I understand how challenging they are and how much pressure students are under to get good scores. The trick to these exams is timing and exam technique I will focus on this from the outset and give students strategies to approach all the question styles they may be faced with.
· English: I have over 50 hours of experience tutoring English up to A level. My most recent student jumped two grades for his final A level English Literature exams, having worked very hard over a year of weekly sessions with me. English Literature is my favourite subject and I love inspiring students who find essay writing frustrating and difficult. I aim to get students thinking about a literary work and help them to find the poignance, emotion and relevance in it. I can then give them a solid framework for writing essays which they can use to get their thoughts down on paper in a sophisticated way.
· 11+/Common Entrance: I have over a year`s experience tutoring for entrance exams which test verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and maths. I introduce students to a wide range of practice questions and give them a framework for approaching more difficult questions. I introduce exam technique, timing and strategy early in the process so that it becomes second nature by test day. Students studying for entrance exams can be particularly anxious I aim to instill confidence and build on their strengths, making lessons as enjoyable as possible so that the students look forward to them.
