Information about Zak

I’m a Cambridge Natural Sciences graduate (first class) and incoming UCL PhD student, with experience in tutoring Science, Maths, English and Latin. I also offer Oxbridge applications tutoring, such as personal statement feedback and interview prep. Whether you’re trying to get ready for an exam, deepen your understanding of a subject or improve your motivation and organisation, I can bring my experience and enthusiasm to a wide variety of requirements, and I always appreciate new challenges.

I recently completed a master`s degree with distinction in Science, Technology and Society at UCL, and in September of this year I will be returning to UCL to start a PhD exploring social justice issues in artificial intelligence. Previously, I did a four-year integrated master`s course at St John’s College, Cambridge, graduating with the highest mark in my cohort. Before that, I received A*s in Biology, Chemistry and Maths and an A in Latin at A Level, as well as an A* in the dissertation-based Extended Project Qualification. I also received A* marks in all 11 of my GCSEs, including a 100% mark in Latin.

These results were all achieved using the methods that I now teach, and I believe that any pupil can do the same if they employ the right learning strategies. I always emphasize fundamental understanding rather than rote memorisation, pairing this approach with a close focus on exam technique and the most efficient ways to get marks. More than just providing academic support, though, I’m happy to share my experience on how to deal with the intensity and pressure that exam preparation can bring, and guide pupils towards achieving their desired grades without compromising on mental or emotional wellbeing.

Above all, I believe that my friendly style of teaching means that I can get along well with any student and turn even a seemingly dull subject into a fun experience rather than something to be dreaded. For many pupils, especially younger ones, tutoring can feel like a chore that they have to reluctantly endure, but I have made it my mission to ensure that my pupils genuinely look forward to all of our lessons and come away not only with more knowledge in their brains but also smiles on their faces.

Availability: I am currently available all hours on weekdays other than Monday evenings and some Tuesday evenings, both for in-person and for online tutoring.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: I began tutoring a decade ago as a pupil at the City of London school, teaching younger pupils who were struggling in particular subjects as part of a voluntary mentoring scheme. While studying at university, I went on to tutor privately at all levels from Year 7 to A Level, and also have experience in advising on university applications and personal statement writing.

After graduating, I spent a year working full-time as a tutor and have accumulated hundreds of hours` worth of experience with a wide range of students and subjects. Since then, I have tutored part-time while studying for my most recent master`s degree, and will continue to do so while I work towards obtaining my PhD.

Zak has been teaching my 12 year old daughters Latin for about 6 weeks. He is a brilliant communicator; his passion for his subject definitely rubs off onto my girls. He is very structured and thorough. He challenges them, leaving them eager to learn more. I am very happy and would highly recommend him. Thank you Zak.
