Information about Paris

I have been passionately engaged in philosopher for over a decade now, and have recently completed a research Masters (MPhilStud) in the subject.

I am eager to give lessons to anyone who is willing and in need of them, from a newcomer up to the Masters level, but even to those further down the line, perhaps working on a PhD, who feel in need of some additional assistance on a given topic.

I consider myself a friendly, flexible and patient teacher, concerned above all else with the all round development of my students` capacity for thought. To teach philosophy is to teach a way of thinking which can in and of itself be thoroughly transformative. I strive to convey the subject in a way that allows this transformative dimension to come alive for others.

Availability: Monday-Friday, varying hours.

Willing to travel: 30 miles

Experience: Over the past four years or so I have hosted group lessons open to a wide audience, mainly on Platonic and pre-Platonic thought, but also on various twentieth-century thinkers. Aside from this, I have done plenty of tutoring one-to-one. My students have been of differing ages and stages of proficiency, so I have experience teaching at both an elementary and advanced level.

My methods vary depending on the specific preferences of the student(s), but as a rule I start with an account of the subject (both historical and philosophical), which occupies around two thirds of the lesson, and then proceed to a discussion, whether in seminar form or one to one. The aim is to develop a rich and nuanced understanding of both the particular and general aspects of the subject by cutting to the fundamentals. This forms the general focus. Philosophy has an intrinsic logic all of its own, making it possible for the respective branches of philosophy (ethics, epistemology, philosophy of mind, politics, etc.) to be rendered thoroughly comprehensible when this is sufficiently attended to and brought to light. In this way, students learn to range quite competently over an otherwise bewildering array of material.
