Information about Michael

Hello, my name is Michael, and I recently graduated with a master`s degree in Cognitive Science (1st) from University College Dublin. This included a blend of mostly Philosophy, Psychology, Biology, and AI. Before that, I received a bachelor`s degree in Computer Science (2.1) from University of Warwick. I previously did A Levels in Computing, Maths, and English Literature, as well as AS Levels in Further Maths and History, so I have gained a broad knowledge of a wide range of subjects across the sciences and humanities. I am hoping to start my PhD next year, on the topic of autism and music education/therapy, before pursuing a career in teaching and research.

In the meantime, I would like to establish myself as a private GCSE / A Level tutor in the local area, with the aims of gaining some practical experience before getting into teaching, as well as inspiring young people to keep learning, making new connections, and exploring their interests. One of my passions is world philosophy, and I would love to bring this rich subject to young people, encouraging them to be curious, think critically, and learn to ask better questions. In my free time, I love creative writing, listening to and making music, drawing/painting, playing video games, and walking/hiking in nature. I am offering tutoring at a range of levels, including primary, secondary, GCSE, A level, and adult learning in a number of subjects across the national curriculum.

If you are interested, please get in touch and I would be happy to discuss how I can help!

Experience: I have been a tutor for only 3 months, so have limited experience. However, I have always enjoyed explaining and discussing abstract concepts with friends and relatives (especially my younger cousins, who attend primary school). Throughout secondary school, college, and university, I have always been eager to help out friends with writing/proofreading and maths/coding problems. I have also spent a few days of work experience in secondary schools, where I had the opportunity to talk to students and teachers in the classroom, and assist students with programming issues. I am hoping to gain more teaching experience in the next year, especially in 1-to-1 tuition.

I am happy to do home visits or meet at a public place like a café for lessons. My teaching approach is flexible, creative, and empathetic. I would tailor my tutoring style to the student`s learning style, pace, and broader interests, treating each lesson as an informal, relaxed conversation. I would be open to mixing-and-matching different subjects to design a personalised learning programme for individual students (for example, this could include English and Maths, with a touch of Philosophy, or any combination), or focusing just on specific topics in preparation for exams. I believe it is important to show how diverse subjects/fields are connected, and grounded in everyday life (not abstract and irrelevant). I hope to build a close, friendly relationship with students over time!
