Information about Anjalee

I am currently a final year medical student at St George`s University of London. My decision to study medicine as a graduate is driven by my interest in helping others and my lifelong enthusiasm for learning. After completing two degrees at university and preparing for medical school entrance exams, I believe that my familiarity with a variety of learning and exam techniques will truly benefit my students.

As a medical student, I learn via a method called ‘problem based learning’. This requires me to research each week’s topic and present it to my peers and tutor, an experience that has helped me to consider how different concepts can be explained in multiple ways.

I have had the opportunity to work with several different teams, from patient facing roles in the NHS to volunteering at a local youth club for the disabled. These roles have presented challenges, such as language barriers and working with non-verbal youths, which has given me the confidence to work and communicate effectively with a diverse range of abilities and age groups. I believe that this will enable me to cater to the needs of a range of students.

My journey to studying medicine has given me an appreciation of the importance of having a solid education from an early age. Had I not been given opportunity to learn in a stimulating and challenging environment, gaining a place to study medicine through a non-traditional route later in life would not have been possible. I would very much welcome the opportunity to help all my students to achieve their full potential, whatever their chosen career path.

Experience: I have worked as a Key Stage 3 science tutor for a tuition centre, teaching groups of up to 8 students at a time. Having a number of students in one class meant that I was able to develop my time management skills, which allowed me to cover all the learning objectives set for the lesson, whilst also giving individual attention to students when they required help.

As a medical student, I know how important an engaging teaching style and effective learning methods can be. During my lessons, I use two methods `active recall` and `spaced repetition`, which I find effective in my own learning. `Active recall` is a method requiring the student to retrieve information from memory, whilst `spaced repetition` ensures topics are repeated at specific time points to promote long-term memory. I encourage active recall, by providing students with the opportunity to explain topics to their peers both verbally or by writing on the board. Furthermore, highlighting any overlap or links between topics helps my students to revise and refresh their knowledge in preparation for tests and exams.
