Information about Holly

Hello! I am a fluent Spanish speaker, experienced tutor and a graduate of the UK’s top conservatoire. I’d love to help you gain confidence and skills in Spanish, or in the language of music!

FOR LEARNERS OF SPANISH: I have been a freelance Spanish tutor in London for the last eight years. After completing my formal education with excellent results at A Level, I continued my learning journey, achieving fluency through extended stays in Spain and South America. I’m keen to help other native English speakers build confidence and fluency in their speech and to understand grammar as an intrinsic part of natural expression, rather than a terrifying set of verb tables! I believe there’s a real benefit to learning a new language with someone who’s also had to learn it too, and knows where the pitfalls are. I’m also a trained opera singer with an intimate knowledge of phonetics, so I’m committed to helping solve and accent or pronunciation issues right off the bat!

I have extensive experience tutoring students up to GCSE level. For A Level students, or adult learners who have chosen to continue their Spanish learning, I believe it is a real shame to ‘teach to the exam’ so, while helping them develop the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed, I am also committed to helping students enrich their formal learning experience with classes involving culture and conversation.

Overall, the most important thing I can give any student is an enthusiasm and love for the language. For that reason, I’m committed to ensuring my lessons are always enjoyable, relevant and good fun. I’m able to tailor my classes to suit all levels and needs.

FOR LEARNERS OF MUSIC: I hold a bachelor and two masters degrees in classical singing from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I also gained a Trinity Guildhall Diploma on the flute. I’ve been a freelance singing and flute teacher for the last three years, also offering beginners classes on the piano. Music has been such a huge part of my life and I strive to instil some of that joy in my students, whatever their musical level or ambitions.

Music Theory knowledge is fundamental to any musician’s understanding of their craft and a great benefit to their practical music-making. You’d be surprised how helpful that knowledge can be while playing, and also how satisfying it can be as a study! I offer theory classes up to the requisite Grade 5 ABRSM syllabus, but would be more than happy to help an enthusiastic student progress further.

Due to coronavirus restrictions, I am not currently able to travel to anyone’s house to give practical music lessons, instead I am only offering online classes, or live classes at my home in London (this is not the case for theory students).
