I’m Patrick. I’m an ambitious, caring and hardworking English tutor and EFL teacher with 9+ years’ experience working with children and adults in a variety of settings. I have a proven track record of supporting learners to achieve their full potential and a passion and flair for nurturing a genuine interest in the subjects I teach.

I started tutoring after graduating with a First Class Honours in English Literature and Philosophy. Since then, I’ve tutored privately, on school programs, in alternative provisions and for learners with additional needs. For two years, I worked with the Tutor Trust. Their tutor training program is delivered in partnership with Manchester University’s PGCE course and is really well-respected. Tutors for the Tutor Trust also regularly undergo observation and for both years my tutoring was observed as ‘Excellent’.

Unlike a lot of tutors, who have what I call a ‘Swiss cheese’ approach, essentially delivering one session at a time, without much thought as to how each session is linked, I believe in a holistic approach and like to work with my students to develop a coherent scheme of work. This approach starts at the outset of our time together, in the form of an initial consultation, setting clear expectations and goals. And continues throughout our sessions, as we continually assess progress and adjust our approach accordingly.

Individual sessions with me are well-structured. Each class begins with a review of previous learning and homework and together we set clear and achievable targets for the outcome of the session. Sessions with me are dynamic and engaging and always take into account an individuals’ learning style.

Similarly, the work you do outside of class is just as important as the work we do within it. I provide meaningful homework tasks that complement our in-class learning. I’m sensitive to the fact that my students’ often lead very busy lives and these extra-curricular expectations will always achievable and in consideration of my students’ other commitments.

At the end of each session, I produce a comprehensive review sheet outlining what we covered and expectations for next time. This provides both myself and my student with a very clear, record of learning/progress.
