Information about Rebecca
My music career consists of both woodwind tuition and freelance work with various orchestras and ensembles. I have recently moved to Bournemouth due to increased amounts of regular freelance work as sub principal flute with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Other regular orchestral freelance work includes English National Ballet, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, City of Birmingham City Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia and various other ensembles.
In the coming year I will be working with a Music Producer/DJ in London to create some original contemporary dance music. I will also be working with a composer in the Bournemouth area to help create a CD of spiritually orientated meditation and healing music. In 2018 I participated in a music project as part of the Women and the Hall season appearing with the London Electronic Orchestra, under the direction of music producer Kate Simko and singer Katy B, performing in the Elgar Room at the Royal Albert Hall.
I have performed on BBC Radio 3, playing Jet Whistle by Villa Lobos for flute and cello, with the London Contemporary Music Festival performing Music for People who like Art by Andrew Hamilton with the ensemble A Genuine Coming Together, The Bells by Rachmaninoff with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, The Creation by Haydn with the BSO, and most recently recording Lyatoshinky Symphony No.3 and Grazyna Symphonic Ballad for Chandos Records also with the BSO.
On the teaching side, before moving to Bournemouth, I was employed by Our Ladies of Victory School (South Kensington) as a peripatetic woodwind teacher. I was also employed by The Harris Academy in Morden, taking individual and group lessons and prior to that was employed by ECAM (Every Child a Musician) giving group woodwind lessons in schools throughout the Newham Borough.
In addition, in London over the last 8 years, I have taught a large number of private pupils of all ages and standards, working with them towards ABRSM exams, concerts and auditions. I shall now be building up my private teaching practise in the Dorset area while at the same time continuing to teach one or two of the London students who show particular promise and with whom I have a particular connection.
During my teaching experiences I have also gained various administrative skills, such as keeping up to date registers and records of pupils, writing reports, planning timetables etc.
I also coach chamber music each year at the Cambridge Summer Music School.
In July 2015 I worked at an orphanage in Galle, Sri Lanka introducing music to the children aged 1-5 for the very first time. It was a truly touching and rewarding experience.
In June 2017 I completed my Masters Degree at The Royal Academy of Music, being awarded Distinction. During my years of study, I was taught by Samuel Coles (Principal Flute Philharmonia), Karen Jones (Freelancer with several London Orchestras), William Bennett (Former Principal of the English Chamber Orchestra) and Helen Keen (Principal Piccolo Royal Philharmonic Orchestra). Prior to being at RAM I completed a Bachelor Degree in Performance Flute at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
After five years at Wells Cathedral School and a further six years at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and then The Royal Academy of Music, I have a lot to offer in terms of instrumental technique, musicianship and many other areas of musical expression. As well as college tuition I have also studied privately with some of the best players players not only in the UK but also in Europe, USA and Australia. I have learnt a great deal over the years from these people and as a result have mastered my art and have a huge amount to pass on to others.
Currently, in order to continue to develop and keep on top of my flute skills, I have periodic lessons with Robert Winn in Cologne, Germany.
I do very much enjoy teaching and it will always be a significant and important part of my career. Teaching music, comes very naturally to me. My youth and enthusiasm are great assets in helping the younger generation identify with me which can encourage and inspire them as they develop for themselves and most importantly it enables me to pass on and instil a great sense of love and joy in music making.
