Information about Joe

I am a professional full-time tutor and qualified examiner specialising in Philosophy & Religious Studies A levels. I have an Undergraduate degree in Philosophy from The University of York and a Masters degree from King`s College London, also in Philosophy.

I started tutoring while studying for my Masters degree just as a part time job but I instantly found it to be incredibly rewarding, so much so that I`m now dedicated to it full time as a career. I`ve been tutoring for 6 years now and each year I learn and improve. I work hard not only at delivering effective lessons but also in improving my ability. I want to be the best tutor in my two subjects!

I`m passionate and enthusiastic about Philosophy and RS and I do my best to ensure that rubs off as much as possible on my students. There`s no greater motivator to study than actually being interested in what you`re studying and I`m very fortunate to be tutoring a subject that is inherently fascinating.

I devote a significant amount of time to explaining exactly how to structure and write essays. With sufficient time and attention essay writing is quite straight forward, yet not understanding how to do essays can really let students down. The truth is, it`s possible to know all of the information in the text book perfectly and yet still fail if essay technique is bad.

One of the best advantages of tutoring over school teaching is the opportunity to give much fuller feedback on essays, so I take full advantage of that. I remember what lessons I draw out for my students when evaluating their essays and guide their future attempts accordingly. Because of this, my students see an instant improvement in their grades.

I am a qualified examiner for the OCR Religious Studies exam board which gives me special insight into exactly what students need to do to gain marks.

I now have considerable experience teaching Philosophy and RS which means I know how well a student needs to be doing at each point over the A level course to be on track for their target grade and exactly what they need to do if they are not. I don`t just turn up and impart some knowledge and hope the student does well, I make sure they are either on track or know what they have to do to be on track.

I have a keen interest in the political and cultural issues that surrounded religion & philosophy in the world today. I find that drawing out the connections between academic ideas and the real world is invaluable for inspiring engagement and interest.

I have a website with revision notes I have spent quite a bit of time and effort writing which all my students get free access too. The notes are a more concise version of a traditional text book yet go into greater detail for evaluation and are set out more in the style a student would write an essay.

Joe is a very good philosophy tutor. He has been tutoring my daughter for her OCR Religious Studies A-Level. He has a calm and patient manner and engages in practical discussion (rather than just dictating notes). He gives useful, constructive feedback on essays. I would positively recommend him. I only wish we had found him earlier...

My daughter (Year 13) has been having Philosophy lessons with Joe for the last 4 weeks now, and she is very impressed. Joe`s approach of reviewing topics and going over exam questions is extremely useful. Overall he is very good !
