Information about Joanne
I am currently studying Medicine at St Georges University having achieved a Psychology degree from the University of Durham. I didnt consider myself to have a passion for learning until my AS-level year at school when I started Psychology. I found the study of the human mind and behaviour fascinating, and was awarded an AQA A-level prize for achieving full marks.
The prize provided a bursary to attend the British Science Festival at the University of Surrey. During the festival, I attended talks that applied science to everyday life. I found that putting science into context helped to facilitate my learning and spark a wider interest a strategy that I apply in tutoring.
Students are under a lot of pressure and I can appreciate how daunting certain subjects can be. I believe keeping a student focused and motivated is key to their success. In order to apply to medicine I had to complete an accelerated Chemistry A2-level course as an evening class, balancing studying with full time work. It was challenging, but I learnt the importance of focusing on the ultimate goal and was motivated to achieve the grade. I aim to incorporate this in my sessions with students.
I am a calm and approachable individual qualities that aid me in my part time role as a Mental Health Care Support Worker. I would love the opportunity to help you or your child to feel enthusiasm for and achieve in school.
Availability: Saturday and Sunday all day.
Willing to travel: 4 miles
Experience: Most of my tutoring experience has been in Psychology and Biology. Most recently, I have tutored sixth form students to success in their AS and A2 levels. I find it motivating to see students progress from unsure and self-doubting to increasingly independent, confident and excited about university study.
I would also be keen to tutor Geography, a favourite subject at school and a topic I have endeavoured to keep up with. Having progressed to my final year of studying medicine, Biology has become a core concept and I would feel very comfortable tutoring at all levels.
I have found that providing context to subjects has a way to bring them to life and increase engagement. I have a flexible approach and believe that a little curiosity and interest can lead to success.
Anxieties can often be hindrance to learning, so I like to encourage practice, repetition and confidence building.
