Information about Annie

My name is Annie and I am a Fine Art Lecturer at Stroud School of Art. I have been teaching for six years and I am experienced in teaching BA, Foundation, Access, L2, KS1,2 and 3 Fine Art.

My tutoring days are Mondays and Fridays.

I teach to share my love and passion for art. I teach to build connections that are routed in creative expression. My aim as a facilitator is to tailor the learning experience around the individual’s needs and interests.

My skill as a teacher is to ignite confidence and passion in making art that celebrates personality, skill, originality and fresh contemporary practices. My current artwork explores anxiety as a result of lockdown in a series of green screen short films, poetry and digital collages.

The British arts education system is outdated, underfunded and does not reflect the current art scene. I have seen first-hand that students who have an awareness of contemporary art are very attractive candidates for higher education establishments. I have an excellent track record for facilitating successful applicants in their onward careers.

Academic Writing
I am also trained to teach academic writing skills such as:

- Essay Writing
- Personal Statement Development
- Presentation Skills
- CV + Covering Letter Writing

Topics Covered:
- Building Framework and Structure
- Grammar, Spelling, Sentence Structure
- Philosophical and Creative Idea Development
- Creative Problem Solving
- Analysing and Understanding Personal Revision Styles

Teaching Style:
My teaching is centered around connecting and invigorating people through art. I enjoy giving specific and constructive advice with an emphasis on embracing the learning opportunities that supposed failure presents. My courses will ultimately teach students how to embrace failure by using their creativity as a means to work through an idea.

As an artist I have a varied practice which incorporates all sorts of media. It ranges anywhere from 2D pencil sketches, paint, photography, embroidery;; to digital media and installation works. This translates into my teaching which is inspired by the processes I follow as an artist. I teach tried and tested, differentiated models of working to help individuals at any stage of their project. My teaching style offers a practical and informed approach to studying art, with plenty of plenaries to cement the learning.

Learning Options:
Drawing and Illustration, Academic Writing, Paint, Print, Photography, Clay, Textiles, Textiles, Academic Writing, Adobe Premiere, Photoshop and Audition, Sound Editing and Recording, Film, Video Editing, Projection and curation.

Within these disciplines, I can assist with portfolio construction and sketchbook development.

Availability: I offer one-off tutorials or a series of lessons.

One-off tutorials will cover the basics of how to set up your workspace and how to generate ideas. I will give an introduction to your chosen materials, how to compose a visually balanced and dynamic composition, as well as how to finish your proposed piece.

In a series of lessons, I can either cover the above activities in more depth, following a project through in its entirety and breaking the process of making a final piece into stages. The series could also involve working with different processes and materials each lesson.

Whichever option you decide to choose, I can either offer you a selection of tasks and projects I have created myself to choose from, or you can come to me with and idea or project you wish to work on. I am very flexible and happy to do either.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: In 2016 I graduated from the University of Reading with a 1st Class Hons in BA Fine Art. I have recently left my position as Head of Art at the prestigious independent school Barrow Hills in Surrey. Alongside this role, I was a Teacher of Art for three years at King Edward’s School Witley. I gained a PGCE whilst teaching, which I passed at Distinction level. In these roles I was able to modernise and reshape the curriculum. Digital arts, installation workshops and gestural drawing classes are some examples of this. I taught 220 pupils throughout lockdown via online learning platforms which gave me excellent experience using this mode of teaching. Since then I have been tutoring a degree pupil, a GCSE pupil and a pupil at primary age. I have also led group adult workshops based on my own projects.

My current practice explores anxiety as a result of lockdown in a series of sculptures, poetry and digital collages.

Online Teaching Methods:
I have refined my ability to teach online via Zoom which has seen extremely successful results. With simple and easy-to-follow guidance, my pupils are instantly familiar with how to learn art online. I use a combination of screen-sharing and image sharing via text to give formative feedback throughout the lesson so that it feels as immersive as possible.
My approach has received excellent feedback from students - please feel free to take a look for yourself via my profile. Using very simple methods, learning via zoom expands one`s skills beyond the practical sense.

Really Brilliant, gave some great advice on what Universities value in an art candidate, as well as how to improve in general. Would definitely recommend!

Our son (9-years old) loves his online art classes with Annie! We asked Annie to introduce our son to Photoshop and she has really risen to the challenge of teaching a fairly complex piece of software to a primary-level pupil. She clearly has lots of patience and a very clear way of communicating through online sessions. Annie is also focusing on pencil drawing with our son and really pushing him to learn new concepts and develop and improve his techniques. We would not hesitate in recommending Annie to others.
