Information about Andrew

Hello! My name is Andrew, and I am currently undertaking my PhD in History at the University of Glasgow. I am conscientious, hardworking, honest and punctual. Crucially, I`m also very easy to talk to. I believe that all it takes for someone to succeed where they`ve struggled in the past, is a helping hand and a bit of guidance.

In the past I have tutored National 5, Higher, Advanced Higher and Undergraduate students. I have also taught on various pre-honours courses at University of Glasgow since 2017. I have undergone GTA (Graduate Teaching Assistant) training.

I possess close links with both the University of Glasgow, and a local High School which has allowed me to gain a unique insight into how students are marked. This is often half the battle. I have found that, once a student fully understands what they are getting marks for (especially at school level), the process of tackling questions becomes much easier.

In my experience, students who struggle with History do so for one of two reasons. They either have issues remembering the content (facts, dates, names etc.), or they don`t know how to properly approach the questions they are asked, and often lose out on marks not because they don`t know their stuff, but because they haven`t presented their answer correctly. Both issues can be corrected with guidance and practice. Whether you are looking for a couple of sessions to clarify something, or intensive tuition, I can provide advice and help in an informal atmosphere. There`s no such thing as a stupid question or an unsolvable problem.

I am also happy to look over work and provide feedback, as I believe this is an invaluable tool in improving academic ability. I would also be happy to help students construct personalised study plans to meet their own needs.

Experience: I have completed a Master of Arts (which I received a First-Class award for) and a Master of Letters (Distinction), both at the University of Glasgow. I have also been the recipient of three academic scholarship awards. This has provided me with an expert knowledge and understanding of both historical content and the practicalities of writing down the things the marker is looking for. Whilst my area of expertise is Early Modern Europe and particularly Scotland (from around 1450-1700), I have broad historical interests, and over the course of my own education, I have studied a vast array of period and topics, from the Neanderthals to the fall of Nazi Germany. I also possess a solid knowledge of the Scottish school curriculum, both at Nationals and Higher level. This, along with my intimate knowledge of the University system, means that I am comfortable providing tutoring for any student, from school to honours.

Andrew is very prompt and gives plenty notice if he needs to change day or time. He explains things very clearly to my daughter so she can understands the lesson. I have no hesitation in recommending him.
