Information about Oliver
I`m an aspiring academic with a masters degree in modern literature from the University of Oxford (2017: Distinction) and an English BA from Durham University (2015: 1st class). I`ve studied British literature, politics and history from the middle ages to the present day, also attaining near fluency in Spanish on the side. I`m currently preparing my research proposal for a PhD focusing on 1930s anti-fascist fiction.
At the moment, I am mainly looking to take on new GCSE and A-level English students of all abilities and ages to help them fulfil their potential. I also welcome enquiries from Spanish, Politics and History students, particularly where the aim is to develop an approach to learning which pushes past the ordinary confines of the curriculum.
In my leisure time, I garden with my girlfriend, cook elaborate vegan meals and play far too much PlayStation. Im a massive fan of silly and surreal comedy, so I spend a lot of time watching alternative comedians in dingy North London pubs. I also moonlight as a creative copywriter for a small web design company.
Apart from all this, I obviously spend a lot of time reading! I love obscure mid-century fiction and youll often find me with my nose in a vintage 1930s thriller.
Availability: I`m currently available on all week nights with the exception of Monday and Friday. I also have some weekend availability.
Willing to travel: 8 miles
Experience: Having tutored English to A-level, GCSE and Scottish Highers students in the year between my undergraduate and masters degrees, I know how helpful one-to-one tuition can be on a long-term basis. This is especially true of humanities subjects which reward students for discovering and pursuing their own particular interests.
As someone with strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of knowledge in all the subjects I teach, I`m always well-placed to identify areas for improvement and come up with a holistic strategy for tutoring. After all, tutors are part of a bigger team that includes parents, teachers and most importantly, the student themselves!
