Experience: 11+ & 13+ English :
English is often thought of a tricky subject as their are so many components - comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and creative writing. I spend my lessons tackling each of these skills thoroughly using specific methods and cheat-sheets I have been given by my teachers (who all happen to be examiners themselves!) and learnt over the years. These skills are essential for writing with clarity and structure - however good your ideas, being able to express them confidently is equally important, if not more so. I specialise in entrance exams for schools such as Westminster, Eton, St Pauls, QE Boys, The Henrietta Barnett School, Tiffins etc and can provide a great deal of inside knowledge as to how these exams work and what admissions officers are looking for.
The woe I constantly hear from parents is - I just cant get my child to read!. Reading is crucial - I have no doubt about that - however building momentum for it and being innovative is key. I start many of my lessons with a discussion about an article from the Financial Times or the New York Times. This encourages independent enquiry and will increase your childs vocabulary, general knowledge and reasoning skills- critical for applying to the best schools in the country. I also use the free online tool and app Quizlet to record useful vocabulary - this can be directly accessed from your phone and reviewed every morning on flashcards on the commute to school. These are just a few of the ways I have adapted my teaching to ensure your child is learning for entrance exams both inside and outside of lessons.
16+/ GCSE/ A-Level English and Biology
Having taken 92 public exams myself (and counting!), I`ve developed effective and individualised revision methods to help your child achieve top grades in their GCSE or A Level subject. I`m very well versed in the GCSE, A Level and Pre-U Syllabuses for English and Biology and in addition to exam preparation can assist in proofreading coursework.
