Information about Briony

Having recently completed a degree in English Literature and Theatre Studies from the University of Leeds, I tutor in English and/or Drama in the W5 area, but am willing to travel further in London depending on the circumstances.

At the University of Leeds, I took modules varying from: Modern Literature, Shakespeare, Theatricalities, Victorian Poetry, and several creative writing modules. Therefore, I have a keen interest in texts and a wide knowledge of how they can be analysed. Likewise, I have developed a well rounded knowledge of texts from studying English throughout my education and reading widely from a young age. I am well informed on the classics such as Dickens, Hardy and Austen and also in more popular secondary school texts such as `Of Mice and Men`, `To Kill a Mockingbird` and `An Inspector Calls`.
Alongside my knowledge of literature, I am confident in grammar checks and supporting in reading, writing and listening.

As a student in Screenwriting at Met Film School, I have a keen interest in creative writing and am enthusiastic about sharing my knowledge and encouraging people to enjoy writing. From having tuition myself at secondary school, I am aware of the positive impact one to one learning can be for a child who is struggling in the classroom setting.

Availability: Available after 6pm most weekdays and weekends.

Willing to travel: 3 miles

Experience: I have had lots of students, ranging from Key Stage 2 to A Level. They all have different strengths and abilities, and I pride myself in being able to discover these, and the areas that need to be improved, quickly and efficiently. I help students with essay writing, grammar, spelling, punctuation, reading and creative writing, amongst other things. All of my students have become much more confident in their abilities and have given me excellent feedback.

I see myself as a very supportive person, and am confident that I adapt to my students` most effective ways of learning. In 2011, I carried out work experience in a primary school, spending most of this time helping children with their reading and writing. I was commended for being patient and relatable, forming positive bonds with the students, and it was wonderful to witness their academic improvements.

Whilst my teaching style varies depending on the age and nature of the student, I am a strong believer in talking through answers ensuring the student can say in their own words what they understand is correct. Likewise, I have learnt that being more proactive in learning tends to be successful so using cue cards, mind maps and essay plans that can be referred back to and put up on walls to enable information to stick in a student`s memory. In general, I feel the most important aspect of tutoring is for the student to feel supported and confident in their own ability, and this is something I always strive to achieve by being honest, friendly and relatable.
