ABOUT ME
I have been teaching English and creative writing since 2011 through private tutoring, university lecturing, and teaching Cambridge college summer schools. I have a master`s degree from the University of East Anglia on their coveted Creative Writing programme and a bachelor`s degree (with honours) in Writing and Film, from which I won prizes for both graduating top of the entire Arts, Laws and Social Sciences faculty and for best Major Writing Project.

I have eight novels published, which have won numerous awards and have topped the best sellers charts on Amazon and I have had 2 films/mini-series produced and distributed on popular streaming sites.
I write widely from novels and films to poetry, short stories and non-fiction. I am so passionate about writing that I am constantly reading about it and keeping on top of new techniques. As a result, I have a wealth of knowledge that is wasted on just me alone and I wish to share it with equally motivated people who want to learn more about English and/or creative writing.

I accept students of all ages and experience.

TEACHING APPROACH
I specialise in KS2 and KS3 English and creative writing with a particular focus on 11+ exam prep.
I was not a great student as a child. Rigid and rote teaching sucked all the appreciation I might have had for learning out of me. That is, until I returned to education in my late 20s and, over the course of two bachelor’s and master’s degrees, discovered just how rewarding it can be. Partly for this reason (and partly because I simply love sharing knowledge!), I began a new career in teaching and for the past 11 years – with over 1,000 hours of teaching logged – I have made a point of injecting colour into a learning world that, for many students, has become drab and monochrome.
I believe that confidence and enjoyment is a big part of success, and confident students make emboldened decisions in their learning, so I will be your child’s biggest supporter. Every child is a unique individual who has their own way of learning so every lesson is tailored to their needs with no comparisons or judgements. Optional confidence-building games and mindfulness exercises are woven into tuition to help prepare them for exams or simply to boost their sense of self-worth.
I have a very creative personality - in my spare time I love painting, model-building, sewing, pyrography to name just a few - and I do my best to infuse my lessons with creative exercises and puzzles that will spark my students’ creativity and engagement. I`m also relaxed and laidback (but don`t let that be confused with complacency on homework!) and provide a safe environment for students to have the confidence to ask questions without fear of rebuke or ridicule.

I also provide novel-writing mentoring; and for older students: essay writing skills and editing of university papers.

EXPERIENCE:
My experience as a tutor ranges from lecturing screenwriting at Anglia Ruskin University, where I am an associate lecturer, to almost ten years of tutoring at an advanced studies summer school at one of Cambridge`s prestigious colleges, and over 600 hours of private 1-to-1 tuition. In addition to these regular teaching commitments, I am often asked to give lectures on the art of creative writing to visiting international students at Cambridge University.

QUALIFICATIONS:
I attended an Access to HE course specialising in creative writing, English literature and journalism, from which I graduated top of my class with a distinction.
I then achieved a BA (with honours) degree in Writing and Film Studies, graduating again top of my class with a first. In addition, I was awarded the McLeod Prize for highest average mark for any student within the entire faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences and the award for Best Major Writing Project, which were the opening chapters of a novel which went on to win numerous literary prizes.
I followed this up with a master`s degree in creative writing on one of the top master`s programmes in the world (at the University of East Anglia), from which I graduated with a distinction.

I would like to take a few moments to provide some feedback on Hannah Hooton, who expertly guided our son through the 11+ process for English. We began the journey back in February 2023, six months in advance of most of the Grammar school exams. First and foremost Hannah was an expert in her subject knowledge. She explained to us at the beginning about important concepts such as spelling punctuation and grammar, sentence starters, story writing, creative writing, letter writing, answering comprehension succinctly and how to cut out excess wording, plus further topics such as how to use sensory language, the use of personification, how to use quotes effectively, and the P.E.E technique. Aside from her excellent mastery of the above topics, she is wonderful teacher and easily built an excellent positive relationship with our son over the weekly Zoom lessons. Hannah is very easy going and was able to accommodate us even at late notice for cancellations or to postpone a lesson. She also had a thorough list of suggested reading for Year 5 and Year 6 children. We highly recommend Hannah and have no doubt she will be able to help your child navigate the tricky and sometimes daunting process of the 11+. It was so much easier with Hannah with us. Wish you all the best in your own journey, and once again, thank you to Hannah.

Tutors Response :

Thank you for your review! Working with Arjun was such a pleasure and I looked forward to our lessons every week. Arjun was incredibly positive and has a very bright future ahead of him. I wish him all the best.

My daughter Veronika needed help in Y11 running up to her GCSEs. Hannah has complemented the schoolwork wonderfully by adapting her teaching in order to focus upon the areas where Veronika was struggling. The online lessons and homework via google docs worked seamlessly.

Tutors Response :

Thanks for your feedback, John. Veronika was a pleasure to work with and was always hard working. I wish her the best of luck going forward.

Best,
Hannah

Hannah is an excellent tutor - she teaches my 9 year old boy English and Creative Writing. One of the routines we appreciate is monthly feedback, which is helpful to point out things that are going well and not so. She is supportive and honest. I highly recommend Hannah.
