Information about Helen
I have over 12 years of tutoring experience. Originally, I worked as research scientist in industry and academia, but after having my children tutoring offered me a great way to feed my passion for science and learning in a way that fitted around family life.
I provide one-to-one online tutoring tailored to meet the individual student`s specific needs. I aim to ensure that students understand the key topics and facts that underpin their chosen subject and to help them to identify and tackle any gaps in their knowledge. I also ensure that they are familiar with the kinds of questions they might encounter in future exams and tests.
I offer support in identifying the ways in which a student learns most effectively, to plan and structure their work and to improve their exam technique. This helps to build confidence and ultimately to achieve better grades. Importantly, it can also improve their day-to-day school experience.
Homework tasks will be set where appropriate, but I know that students can already be very busy with school or work commitments, so I won`t overburden them.
Availability: Flexible - mainly term time.
I can provide regular weekly sessions between the hours of 9am - 9pm. I also provide booster sessions in which students will receive support in specific topic areas or in concentrated revision in the run up to exams.
Willing to travel: 15 miles
Experience: I am an expert tutor with over 12 years of experience delivering Primary and Secondary Maths, GCSE Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Combined Science. I have a PhD in Biology from The University of Edinburgh and a PTTLS qualification. I have previously worked for Derby County council working with children in care, Rutland County council as a Family Learning tutor and I have provided Maths intervention within a local Primary school.

Sadly Helens summer availability clashed with mine so that we didnt have her as a tutor, however she seemed a very organised professional.

Helen has a super positive, can do attitude and managed to get the best out of my initially,reluctant- to- learn teenager who was not really in the mood for extra science lessons. Helen managed to get my teenager engaged and made the science lessons less daunting my breaking the lessons down into small manageable chunks. My teenager thought Helen was excellent and I would be happy to recommend her to anyone needing positive reinforcement lessons in the sciences.

Our daughter was lacking in confidence following mocks. We asked Helen to tutor her on all 3 sciences with an emphasis on Biology as she wishes to study this at A level. Helen has made science enjoyable, explained content clearly and finds fun ways to help memory and recall. Emphasis has been on prioritising revision to the key areas of the syllabus and understanding the mark scheme. She is naturally positive and enthusiastic and this has rubbed off on our daughter so that she went into her GCSE exams feeling positive and confident. We would highly recommend Helen and just wish we had found her sooner.
