These days, more and more students are pursuing higher education. This is due to numerous factors, including more opportunities, stronger competition in the jobs market, and higher entry requirements for various potential careers. Whilst degree performance is widely seen as the pinnacle of most students' academic journey, it is not really a useful measure for comparison. Degrees vary across universities, in difficulty, content, forms of assessment, duration, etc. Even the same degree course at a particular university can have huge variation year on year, due to available modules, changes of lecturer, etc. For this reason, A-levels are still strongly believed to be the most linear form of comparison between prospective employees, from an academic perspective at least. It is only fair to point out that some of the stated differences between degree courses will apply at A-level, but are nowhere near as marked, simply because thousands of students nationally take the same sets of examinations. It is for this reason that they are usually central to a company`s entry requirements when recruiting for their graduate scheme. For this reason, it is imperative in today's competitive marketplace for the next generation of young professionals to underpin their degree performance with a set of A-levels befitting their potential.
