Positive, negative and questions with use of do/does/did

Positive statements, negative statements and questions

For some verb tenses, do/does/did is needed in negative statements and questions.

Present simple tense:

P I swim every day. N I do not swim every day. Q Do you swim every day?

P You understand. N You do not understand. Q Do you understand?

P He smokes cigarettes. N He does not smoke cigarettes. Q Does he smoke cigarettes?

P She speaks French. N She does not speak French. Q Does she speak French?

Present continuous tense:

P I am swimming every day. N I am not swimming every day. Q Are you swimming every day?

P They are painting the fence. N They are not painting the fence. Q Are they painting the fence?

Past simple tense:

P The girl went shopping. N The girl did not go shopping. Q Did the girl go shopping?

Past continuous tense:

P The girl was going shopping. N The girl was not going shopping. Q Was the girl going shopping?

Completed action:

P We have cleaned the kitchen. N We have not cleaned the kitchen. Q Have we cleaned the kitchen?

Use of do/does/did for emphasis in a positive statement:

I do like your hair! She does look tired! We did enjoy our holiday!
