Erasmus and international students who come to study or work in the UK have a fantastic opportunity to embrace British life and culture in their city.

Liverpool boasts some of the best cultural attractions, shopping and nightlife that there is to offer. However, many spend time in the company of other international students and do not find it easy to mix and make friends with the locals. Here are five tips to help you meet and make friends with British people and get the most out of your experience

1) Accommodation. Look to share with British people so that you can get to know them better. By making friends you will get a true taste of their culture and improve your English language skills at the same time.

2) Get involved. Look to join in activities that you are interested in or try new things. Linguaverse students in the past have participated in theatre groups, cinema clubs and sports teams to get involved.

3) Find work. Not everybody has the time to work, but attaining a part-time job means you will be interacting with locals, in person, on a daily basis. Take advantage of any opportunities to socialise with them outside of work too.

4)Be open-minded. The people of Liverpool are warm and friendly so don't be shy to start a conversation. Don't be afraid to speak English with native speakers as the chances are your English is better than their knowledge of other languages. Impress them.

5) Social networking. Start writing your statuses or tweets in English to encourage the involvement of native speakers. Also keep an eye out for any local events taking place. If you embrace their language and culture, they are more likely to embrace yours.
