This is something a lot of students struggle to differentiate between.

A metaphor and a simile are both figures of speech that make comparisons, but they differ in how they make those comparisons.

A metaphor directly equates two things by stating that one thing is another.

For example:

- Her voice is music to my ears

- Time is money

- His laughter is infectious

A simile uses "like" or "as" to compare two things. It explicitly states that one thing is like or resembles another.

For example:

- Her voice is like velvet

- She was as wise as an owl

- His smile is as bright as the sun

Can you think of your own examples of metaphors and / or similes?
