One question many interviewers ask is "What is your greatest weakness?"

You don`t want to respond with weaknesses that will stop you from getting the job. However, saying you don’t have any weaknesses may come across as being too self-assured. Interviewers want to know how honest and self-aware you are

The art of answering this question is to give an honest answer and how you work on being better. Turn a negative into a positive.

Before going to any interview, think about your weakness, and ask yourself:

  • What is your weakness?
  • What are you doing to change?
Then think of the answer you will give (DONT MAKE IT TOO LONG! 100 words is fine) However:

  • Don’t share just any weaknesses in response to the question.
  • Do think about the job requirements and the type of answer that will make hiring managers want to work with you.
  • Be honest in a way that won`t make the hiring manager question your suitability for the role.

If you aren`t sure of what to say, typical interview weaknesses include:

  • Lack of patience
  • Being disorganised
  • Not good at delegation
  • Shyness
  • Indecisiveness
  • Micromanaging
  • Being too talkative

For instance, if you have a fear of public speaking, you could answer:

Public speaking makes me nervous. I don`t need to do much public speaking in my job as a programmer, but I still feel that it`s an important skill, especially when I want to offer my opinion during a meeting. To tackle this, I spoke with my manager and she recommended I speak at each team meeting for a few minutes about my current project, timelines, deadlines, and goals. This practice means I can relax and see public speaking as an opportunity to help my team members do their work effectively.

AND REMEMBER:

In every weakness, there is a strength. The strength is in how you work to overcome it.
